We've been working closely with Vodacom on their sustainability journey over the last while 🌟 Tweak founder, Camille O'Sullivan, had a blast participating in their first-ever #CarbonFootprint & Sustainability Day. It was a fantastic opportunity to share and learn alongside everyone involved. 🥗

💡 In the two years of Tweak, we've learnt a few things about driving behavioural change 👉 The problem with sustainability is that you can't see your impact: Inherently, people struggle to connect their actions to environmental consequences. Unlike the short and long-term effects of smoking or sugary drinks, the impact of carbon emissions (CO2e) feels abstract - nobody can link their personal behaviours to climate change. We address this by providing a platform that visualises the real-world impact of everyday choices. This is why we've developed Umi, a character that personifies climate change, allowing users to see the direct consequences of their actions. 👉 Making a choice can be complicated: The sheer amount of information and options available deepens the sustainability "say-do" gap, making it difficult to translate intentions into concrete actions. We tackle this by promoting bite-sized, achievable steps towards sustainability. Our marketplace offers a curated selection of simple, cost-effective product substitutions that users can easily integrate into their lives. It's not perfect, but it gets people to make a change and to feel good about it. We believe that real behavioral change leans on simplifying the journey to becoming greener. By making the impact visible, the actions simpler, and the journey more engaging (through Umi), Tweak enables people to embrace a more sustainable way of life. Here are two resources we recommend having a look at to learn more about behavioural change and gamification: ⭐️ https://lnkd.in/dpKVNzU9. ⭐️ https://lnkd.in/dKQtqqmw

We've been getting up to some really exciting stuff at Tweak! For one - we've just released our new Tamagotchi-like feature called Umi. He's a sweet little penguin who accompanies you on your sustainability journey on our app, nudging you to take action along the way. The greener you are, the healthier Umi is. If you start to fall short, his health declines and he dies, prompting you to take climate action to keep Umi going. I've attached a screenshot of the little guy, but it's probably best to download the app. 😉 I also did my first pitch on behalf of Tweak last week, at Innovation City Cape Town's Start-Up Of The Year Awards. Truthfully, I was mortified to present in front of around two hundred people; the last time I'd been up on a stage of any kind, was over six years ago where I knew everyone in the room. We did well though, making it to the top five in our category - and we are very, very proud. We're still fledglings in so many ways, so this is a big one for us. I am VERY grateful to Camille O'Sullivan, Tweak's founder, and Dana Harding, our UX/UI & design wiz for creating a great product (and for being incredibly patient with me!). ⭐

A founder making a dent in the universe | tryna build a billion dollar company | ENTJ-A Personality (Commander) | AI

Where you see 10 Startups -> I see 10 initiatives making meaningful dents on the universe 🦄 It's ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS down to the framing. As a founder, sometimes I get lost in my framing, get too busy focusing on the trees right in front of me to miss the (metaphorical) forest. Keep zooming out to see the forest you are working in! The forests that I saw last night at Innovation City Cape Town: • South Africa leading the world in cultivated meat production (Newform Foods) • Revolution in the unemployment & jobless graduate crisis (Gradlinc) • A significant decrease in late arrivals to Innovation City events due to parking issues (Parket) • Africa leading the way in low income-earners attaining financial freedom (Veya.) • South Africa leading the way with COMPLETELY green hydrogen (BurnStar Technologies) • The South African Uber that empowers the informal sector (e-HHiKe) • Think Vitality rewards but for being a good, green, and sustainable climate-conscious citizen (Tweak) • Tuberculosis (TB), you are a thing of the past (AI Diagnostics) • Finally you are able to actually know how to use all that valuable customer research you spend that R&D budget on (sens) • Understand your gut, to better understand depression (Biomine) Huge kudos to all the founders that presented, and for all the startups making the cut for the top 10 finalist presentation! These events are extremely powerful to not only connect with new people, but to also understand what sort of questions the panel of judges are asking. By taking note of their questions, you can better know which aspects of your startup needs to be clearer or have more traction-evidence. The question I ask myself is why networking is even important... Basic "networking" is pretty, well, basic. Lacking utility in most cases. I like to rather call what I do as proactive networking: -> The intentional effort to connect with specific people doing specific things. = Founders in the tech space (in some way or form) From there I can: • Tap into secondary & tertiary connections • Gain fellowship with people in the same boat as myself (trying to build a startup to make a dent in the universe - what a phenomenally crazy idea!) • Find some form of collaboration in brainstorming, referrals, and maybe even professionally. Thank you again Kieno, stephan, and the rest of the IC team for such an amazing evening. ——— Look, I am just trying to figure out life just as you are, this is a journey we take, and when taken together, I believe magic starts to happen. If this could help just one person in your network, how would that make you feel?  Most probably AMAZING… 🙌 It would make me feel that way ;) ♻️ Repost it to your network and follow Ethan Glenny for more GREAT stuff! Let’s keep making dents in the universe! 💫🦄
