Weaving New Paradigms

About us

Nature provides the foundational value upon which every industry depends. It’s about time we put a price on it. |XAU’s purpose is to close the biodiversity financing gap while there’s still time, ensuring that the conservation and protection of nature can be done with autonomy, making it more viable by reducing stewards’ reliance on donations and grants. Our mission is to conserve biodiversity over generations by weaving together existing financial models, industry practices, and expertise into innovative structures that enhance their collective ability to protect nature. We're co-leading the transition from recognising nature's value to assigning a price for its protection. While XAU is widely recognised as the symbol for gold in financial markets, the name |XAU originates from the indigenous Khoisan language of Southern Africa, meaning “to embark on a magical expedition." At |XAU, we create Nature Assets that weave us into new value systems, rewarding both conservation stewards and investors, crafting a future with our money and embedding our lives with greater meaning. Our asset approach allows businesses to implement a Nature Positive strategy through investments, without impacting their P&L as they finance the protection of biodiversity in endangered areas that align with their nature dependencies and impact. Our core value is 'high integrity at all times,' encompassing reliable and auditable biodiversity data, as well as the free, prior, and informed consent and participation of indigenous peoples and local communities.

  • We were honoured to discuss the role of Biodiversity Credits in business alongside Onçafari and BRDE, hosted by Biodiversity Credit Alliance's Manesh Lacoul. Biodiversity Credits were undoubtedly a hot topic at this COP, with sessions filled to capacity as people sought to understand the potential of this emerging instrument. Our founder shared our perspective on Biodiversity Credits as essential tools for measuring "asymmetrical equality" — balancing efforts between businesses working to mitigate their environmental impact and land and sea stewards safeguarding nature. Joana Picq compared Biodiversity Credits to currencies; in a world that must reckon with its nature debt across industries, instruments like these are crucial to directing resources to those who can build their "nature savings." Mario Haberfeld highlighted the potential autonomy that he hopes Biodiversity Credits will bring to NGOs and shared some of the remarkable journey of the Onçafari team. Leonardo Busatto outlined BRDE's pioneering role in this market, investing in assets whose financial value is yet to be fully recognised. Some say the biodiversity credits market is in its infancy, but we believe it’s still navigating the birth canal… And we hope this is a strong ingenious baby that can grow fast, because there’s no time to wait for another attempt! Given the BCA's work with LIFE Institute and other credit scheme players, we believe this new market can be as innovative and resilient as it needs to be.  COP16 Colombia left us even more confident in its value for our investment models!

    Rethinking Conservation & Biodiversity

Honoured to have contributed to the final publishing of this World Economic Forum Paper on Biodiversity Credits. A very interesting dive into main credit scheme methodologies at the very conception of this new market. "The paper focuses on biodiversity credit markets, analysing and comparing three emerging models under the established key decisions among existing credit methodologies and standards: the comprehensive aggregate model, using composite, direct measurements; the critical indicator model, taking higher-level and more ecosystem-specific views; and the mosaic compilation model, which includes a variety of measurements related to key decisions. Additionally, the paper explores how metrics relate to disclosure frameworks, a particularly relevant topic for businesses engaging in nature-positive finance." https://lnkd.in/dzxkpBhw

    Rethinking Conservation & Biodiversity

Honoured to have participated in Onçafari's 2nd prize in this year's #Tech4Wildlife Photo Challenge! Our photo of charred camera traps was a visual reminder that technology is also at the mercy of wildfires, even if Onçafari's conservation work has helped save much of the wildlife they protect in Brazil, thanks to their scientific and hands on approach. These are unprecedented fires that their teams are still fighting on the ground in the Pantanal. Original silver medal post: "Camera traps, trapped in a raging fire that death trapped wildlife. A tragic reminder that tech cant beat nature, and yet that tech can protect wildlife! Photo by Onçafari whose tech protected most animals and whose hands will feed them for survival"

🥇 🥈 🥉 We're *almost* done wrapping up the 2024 #Tech4Wildlife Photo Challenge festivities...All that's left to do is announce our Judging Panel Award winners! In the photo category, we have Danielle Rivet, PhD monitoring the effect of sea ice dynamics on polar bears, Joana Picq demonstrating the power of #cameratraps to save wildlife (and all they endure), and Open Acoustic Devices detecting infrasonic elephant rumbles. In the video category, Aamir Ahmad showed us how perception-driven autonomous airships can monitor wildlife, Melissa (Crytzer) Fry gave us a glimpse at the biodiversity in the San Pedro River area, and WildDrone revealed how infrared cameras capture humpback whales' heat prints. Lastly, we honour our judges' favorite story submissions: Digital Naturalism Labs and their open-source insect biodiversity monitoring tool; WildTrack.org's footprint identification work that delivers ecosystem and climate information; and FishEye Collaborative, which is deploying continuous acoustic recorders deep in the ocean. We'd like to give a special thanks to our esteemed judging panel: Beatrice Hipolito, Geoff Daniels, Jacinta Plucinski, Dr. Krithi K. Karanth, Dr Lucy King, and Rhett Ayers Butler for being a part of this year's challenge. Every year, we ask the community to show us how you they #Tech4Wildlife, and they never disappoint. We loved learning about many incredible #conservationtech projects over the last few weeks, and it's inspiring to see all the creative ways the sector continues to use #Tech4Wildlife. See you on WILDLABS! Learn more about the Judging Panel Award winners here: https://lnkd.in/dmu46rnG

  • The Pantanal is meant to burn cyclically, but those cycles have gone out of whack. This unprecedented burn has killed the most iconic Jaguar of Brazil, Gaia. Our hearts bleed for her loss... Onçafari now needs to scale their restoration work while expanding their fire prevention efforts in other areas - time to triple or quadruple efforts all around! And that growth and expansion requires funding. Our job is to develop new funding models for their conservation and restoration work, so that funding is never a stopper to protecting or restoring what is most precious on earth.

  • Our first event in Brazil - a real optimism booster to be surrounded by Brazil's biggest energy, oil and mining companies to discuss biodiversity!
