The future of Sub-Saharan Africa is increasingly urban. As millions of people migrate to cities in search of better opportunities, these urban centres will shape the continent's social, economic, and political landscape. However, the rapid pace of urbanisation presents significant challenges, including housing shortages, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution. To ensure a sustainable future, African cities must adopt innovative urban planning strategies, invest in public transportation, and promote green technologies. https://lnkd.in/dQ_UgrkY

Nandi-Ndaitwah won 57% of the presidential vote, outpacing opposition leader Panduleni Itula of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), who garnered 25.5%. However, SWAPO's parliamentary support declined to 53%, down from 65% in 2019. Securing 20% of the parliamentary vote, the IPC has strengthened its role as a key opposition party. Analysts suggest that Nandi-Ndaitwah’s popularity may have eclipsed growing public discontent with SWAPO, as voters prioritised her leadership qualities over party affiliation. Her presidency signals a potential shift in how Namibians approach governance, blending continuity with the promise of reform. Subscribe to our newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dHV8Dtng

How does a nation celebrated for its democratic ideals come to embody moral and institutional decay? Under Jacob Zuma, South Africa witnessed the erosion of its constitutional integrity, as his presidency morphed into a network of patronage and self-interest. Zuma’s populist rhetoric masked systemic failures, exploiting racial divisions and scapegoating “white monopoly capital” to deflect criticism. His administration deployed the machinery of state to silence dissent and secure loyalty, culminating in a political landscape riddled with corruption, inefficiency, and mistrust. The toll? A fractured ANC, a polarised society, and a once-hopeful democracy grappling with the shadows of authoritarian tendencies. https://lnkd.in/dGyMKraj

International isolation, a common response to unconstitutional power grabs and civil wars in Africa, can have devastating economic consequences. While intended to deter future conflict, it can also lead to a decline in foreign direct investment, exacerbating economic hardship. This article from the 37th edition of Africa in Fact, argues that a more nuanced approach, balancing condemnation with continued engagement, may be necessary to mitigate the negative economic impacts of conflict: https://lnkd.in/daAkN_Jg

On August 21, 2014, Julius Malema and his Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) turned South Africa’s National Assembly into a stage for radical accountability. Donning red overalls and hard hats, the EFF disrupted question time with chants of “Pay back the money!”—a rallying cry aimed at President Jacob Zuma over public funds used on his Nkandla residence. This act of defiance challenged the status quo, as Malema demanded an answer for corruption that had persisted unchecked by the AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS-led assembly. For Malema, this was a historic moment, the EFF stepping forward as an opposition that would not back down. But this new breed of parliamentary “fighters” raised the question: would Malema’s methods breathe new life into South African democracy, or lead it down a dangerous path of populism? https://lnkd.in/dYtXKibK
