Last week, at the Google DevFest Zambia facilitated by GDG Lusaka , I had the privilege of sharing a concept that’s been brewing in my mind for a while now: how AI acts as a catalyst in healthcare, much like light and chlorophyll drive photosynthesis. Here’s the core idea: In photosynthesis, light (the catalyst) activates chlorophyll, triggering a series of reactions that produce life-sustaining energy. In healthcare, AI plays a similar role, accelerating processes like diagnostics, patient management, and workflow automation. But here’s where it gets interesting… Catalysts alone aren’t enough. Just as enzymes in the body require extra support to function properly, so do catalysts. This brings us to the concept of cofactors which are natural elements, like minerals, that support enzymes and catalysts by enabling them to function effectively. For example, magnesium is a critical cofactor in photosynthesis. It enables chlorophyll to capture light energy and convert it into usable energy for plants. Without magnesium, the entire photosynthesis process would grind to a halt, even though light and chlorophyll are present. In the same way, AI needs supporting cofactors to truly transform healthcare. In healthcare, I introduced three critical cofactors that allow AI to create real impact: 1. Funding: No catalyst (AI) can function without the necessary resources. Investment drives everything from R&D to implementation. 2. Policy: Clear, supportive policies create a stable environment for AI to thrive and protect the public good. 3. Research & Development (R&D): Innovation fuels relevance. Continuous R&D ensures that AI adapts to the unique needs of healthcare systems. While AI speeds up the reaction, it’s these cofactors that make the reaction possible. This analogy sparked some deep conversations at DevFest, and I was thrilled to see how many people connected with it. But this is just the beginning. In a future post, I’ll explore the other components of this equation that are just as essential for healthcare transformation. 🚨 Call to Action 🚨 The ongoing AI and Startup Bill has the power to shape Zambia’s digital future. It’s a chance to ensure that the right cofactors (funding, policy, R&D) are in place for startups and AI-driven innovations to thrive. Young people must be part of this conversation! Your voice, ideas, and perspectives matter. 📢 Get involved. Share your thoughts. Advocate for change. Let’s create a future where AI isn’t just a buzzword but a true catalyst for growth, equity, and opportunity. If this perspective resonated with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you see funding, policy, and R&D shaping AI’s role in healthcare? Let’s keep the conversation going! #AI #HealthcareInnovation #CatalystsForChange #GoogleDevFest #DigitalHealth #LasoDigitalHealth #AIandStartupBill #YouthInTech #PolicyForChange
