This is worth a read! Very pragmatic and cuts through the hype while acknowledging the promise. Lots of great practical guidance in here. One thing I have been thinking a lot about is what the writers call Proportionality - "The AI methods used should be justified, appropriate and not exceed what is needed to achieve a legitimate aim." (pg 10). There is a lot of excitement around AI. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum, we've been so preoccupied with whether or not we could, they didn't stop to think if we should. Other things that stood out to me: * Focusing on low-cost as a means to reduce inequity. * Adopt, adapt, or buy? Good to see others thinking along [similar lines](https://lnkd.in/epi-tp_A). * Costs vs ROI: You are definitely underestimating the cost of rolling out an AI solution. Demos are easy. Scale is hard.

Writing this post from Nairobi, where some of the Reach Digital Health team is attending the Global Digital Health Forum, #GDHF2024 and I’m thrilled to share an exciting milestone. Yesterday evening, we launch our white paper, AI for Health and Social Impact in Africa, which investigates how AI can be a transformative force in bridging healthcare gaps across the continent. This paper explores how we can responsibly use AI to address critical challenges like infrastructure limitations and data scarcity while unlocking opportunities to empower frontline health workers and communities with innovative digital tools. It’s about creating scalable, sustainable solutions that truly make a difference for those who need it most. At Reach Digital Health, we believe in partnerships that lead to action, and this paper reflects the collaborative spirit and commitment of our team and stakeholders. I’m proud to represent an organisation that’s not just talking about the future of healthcare but actively building it. 🎬 New Research Video Alert! How can we enhance health data governance to support AI innovation in low-resource health systems? At the Data for Policy 2024 conference, ✍️ Tracey Li, ✍️ Abbas J. Wandella from D-tree, ✍️ Richard Gomer from University of Southampton, and ✍️ Mr. Mohamed Habib Al-Mafazy from the Ministry of Health in #Zanzibar presented their insightful study titled 📄 “Operationalizing Health Data Governance for AI Innovation in Low-Resource Government Health Systems - A Practical Implementation Perspective”. Their research explores the challenges of health data governance in low-resource settings, focusing on informed consent, data access and security, and data quality. They highlight barriers to meaningful informed consent and the need for effective communication about data and AI. The study uses the Zanzibar health system as a case study to discuss the implementation of data management guidelines and the impact of data quality on AI development. Discover practical strategies for improving health data governance and how to overcome the challenges in low-resource settings. 📽 Watch the full presentation on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eUsqbQ73 To watch the playlist of all Data for Policy 2024 full-length presentations: https://lnkd.in/gTDcZ2sm #AIInnovation #HealthData #DataGovernance #LowResourceSettings #HealthTech #DataForPolicy #Zanzibar #DataforPolicy2024

When artificial intelligence is developed with understanding and intention, we create space for radical change. The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation’s partnership enables TIP Global Health to expand access to health resources in underserved communities by supporting the development of an AI framework leveraging point-of-care data to deliver predictive insights that improve maternal and child health outcomes in East Africa. This demonstrates AI’s promise to strengthen digital health systems, improving the well-being of our world. Localising Real World Data (RWD) in the healthcare sector is highly strategic to help with proper diagnosis, accurate forecasting (that should help in putting preventive measures in place) within our locality as well as speeding up appropriate treatment plans as due. Also, it is to the advantage of our local institutions if utilised and yes! ofcourse, if used for training models would position them for higher degree of predictive accuracy. I can't agree more to the need for us to tap into the potentials of AI by leveraging on it to bring "timely heathcare to everyone's fingertips".
African Business Coalition for Health Dr. Mories Atoki (Hon.) moderated a great session on Building a Sustainable AI and Digital Health Ecosystem in Africa. It was great to speak to the audience and the panelists after our session. We have such great opportunities for collaboration to build an AI ecosystem that can deliver quality universal healthcare.

"The future of health is digital, and supporting countries to harness the power of digital technologies for health is a priority for WHO. S.A.R.A.H. gives us a glimpse of how artificial intelligence could be used in future to improve access to health information in a more interactive way. I call on the research community to help us continue to explore how this technology could narrow inequities and help people access up-to-date, reliable health information." AI has the potential to transform health in Africa, tackling some of our toughest challenges. But it’s a double-edged sword—without care, it could deepen inequities, waste resources, or fail to deliver meaningful impact. This white paper dives into why Responsible AI is non-negotiable, especially in the African context. From addressing data scarcity and skill shortages to ensuring AI developed in the Global North works for African realities, it’s a critical read for anyone invested in health innovation on the continent. #AI #therevolution #socialimpact #digitalhealthcare The Rebel Element ASAIPA - THE ALLIANCE OF SOUTH AFRICAN IPA'S Kelly Bentley Cameron Baker Debbie Rogers Reach Digital Health

Last night I had the great pleasure of being a part of a lively discussion on 'AI in Healthcare' at the Digital Health Copenhagen - Meetup.com event at Health Tech Hub Copenhagen. Together with Katalin Vikuk, Mark Yousef, Constant Beroulle and Nicolas Bouchet we touched upon many aspects of this brave new world. All under the expert hosting of Paula Petcu. There were a few points, I felt it was important to get across, when we discuss the opportunities for AI in healthcare: - Trustworthiness is going to be key. We simply need to make sure we have both data privacy, data security and product quality under absolute control. Leniency and mistakes can have severe personal consequences in healthcare. - When trying to push the message about AI into healthcare, we need to be more thoughtful of how we frame it. We need to focus more on 'Narrow AI' in compartmentalized 'boxes', where it essentially is a question about adding a performance and efficiency booster to something that is already well understood by clinicians. That will help combat myths, fears and what have you and pave the way for some really strong factual use cases that deliver positive outcomes. - Founders need to close the gap between the realities in the healthcare sector and the fantasies of the tech world. Healthcare is not an industry, where you can just assume that your customers and stakeholders will 'get it' or ' go home'. The healthcare sector is - for good reason - risk averse, focused on real evidence and quite conservative. Put yourself in their shoes and understand them, if you ever want to sell something to them. We also briefly touched upon what is going on in the US, and what impact RFK is going to have on regulation etc over there. I called it an "interesting experiment", we will likely see over there and at the same time expressed my gratitude that I am personally not going to be one of the guinea pigs of whatever it is that they will be doing going forward. I think there are some early signs that there could be some troublesome developments and 'free for alls', which could end up hurting people. I hope I will be proven wrong on this one. Thanks again to the organizers for inviting me for such a great session, and sorry for the AI generated picture. It just seemed in its place for this particular topic. #healthcare #digitalhealth #meetup #ai
