About us

The Electronic Government (e-Gov), also known as the Smart Zambia Institute, operates as a division within the Office of the President. Its primary mandate is to manage and promote electronic government services and processes. The division is responsible for facilitating access to these services, aiming to enhance service delivery and improve citizens' access to government services. Additionally, it coordinates e-government initiatives and oversees matters related to information and communication technology in public bodies. The division derives its authority from the Electronic Government Act No. 41 of 2021, a governance act designed to enable access to electronic government services and enhance service delivery. On January 7, 2022, His Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, the President of the Republic of Zambia, signed the Commencement Order for the Electronic Government Act No. 41 of 2021. Consequently, the E-Government Division, operating under the Smart Zambia Institute, will function in accordance with the provisions of the Electronic Government Act No. 41 of 2021.

  • SMART ZAMBIA RECEIVES NETWORKING EQUIPMENT TO BOOST DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION LUSAKA, December 24th 2024---Zambia's digital transformation journey just got a major boost with the arrival of critical networking equipment from China. The Electronic Government Division (SMART Zambia Institute) has received the consignment, which includes routers, switches, access points, and other essential accessories. Principal Networks Engineer Mr DANSTAN KAUNDA has emphasized the importance of the equipment in supporting the government's efforts to digitalize all public sector services, with local authorities being a priority, especially with the rollout of the Constituency Development Fund Management Information System (CDF MIS). "This equipment will play a vital role in supporting the rollout of the Government Wide Area Network (GWAN) to the remaining 88 sites across the country, including local authorities, bringing the total number to 171 sites of which 83 were done in the first phase," he said. Mr KAUNDA explained that the development is expected to have a profound impact on Zambia's digital landscape, promoting digital inclusion, economic growth, and social development. The GWAN project is a key component of Zambia's digital transformation strategy, aimed at improving connectivity and enhancing service delivery to local authorities nationwide. The rollout of the GWAN to 88 sites countrywide is set to be completed by 2025, aligning with Zambia's goal of achieving 80% internet penetration by 2026 under the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP).   • SMART ZAMBIA TEAM RESTORES INTERNET OUTAGE CAUSED BY UNLIKELY CULPRITS MASAITI, December 23rd 2024--- In a bizarre incident, a team from SMART Zambia Copperbelt office, was called to troubleshoot an internet outage at the Masaiti District Commissioner's office, only to discover that the culprit behind the disruption was a group of rodents. According to Principal ICT Officer Ms Shyne Mapani, the network had been down for four days, causing disruptions to critical government services. Upon investigation, the team found that rats had chewed through the patch cords, causing the outage. "We were surprised to find that the rats had eaten through the patch cords, which was the root cause of the problem," Ms Mapani explained. "We quickly replaced the damaged patch cords, and the internet connection was restored." The incident highlights the importance of ensuring that critical infrastructure is protected from unexpected threats, including rodents.   • BOMA FREE WI-FI BOOSTS EFFICIENCY AT CHIRUNDU BORDER CHIRUNDU, December 23rd 2024---The Electronic Government Division (SMART Zambia Institute) recently deployed Boma Free WiFi at five border posts nationwide. The connected borders include Chirundu, Mwami, Chanida, Kasumbalesa, and Katima Mulilo. According to Ms THERESA MWANZA, Ministry of Health, PortHealth In Charge at Chirundu One-Stop Border Post, the free WiFi has greatly enhanced service delivery at the health facility and Officers no longer need to spend personal internet bundles to do their work. “We can now attend to patients promptly and send daily reports easily," she said.
