The quest for an inclusive society
About us
SIVIO Institute (SI) is a Non-Governmental Organisation passionate about ensuring that citizens are at the centre of policy development. Using interactive technology platforms, like ZimCitizensWatch (www.zimcitizenswatch.org) to enhance tracking, analysis and implementation of effective public policy, we serve as a catalyst for inclusive political and socio-economic transformation. More specifically, our work entails multi-disciplinary, cutting-edge policy research and advocacy. So what do we have that others don't? SI has three programs of work focused on; (i) public policy analysis and advocacy (ii) philanthropy and (ii) building vibrant and engaged communities. In the process SI addresses the following problems: • Inadequate performance of existing political and economic system • Increasing poverty and inequality • Limited coherence of policies across sectors • Ineffectual participation in public processes by non-state actors • Increased dependence on external resources and limited leveraging of local resources

In this episode, we discuss the supposed 'ephemeral' nature of community-based foundations practicing African Philanthropy. In this conversation Tendai Murisa and Nontsikelelo Nzula interrogate the lack of systems, structure, and sustainability of African organisations. Although agile and responsive, #tendaimurisa posits that African philanthropy organisations have not set themselves up for permanence because they believe the problems they deal with are temporary, only requiring a temporary solution. Despite their ephemerality these pools build community resilience in a significant way. They stand against a potential threat of loss of agency when larger organisations engage with communities. The conversation also raises questions of how broad-based participation should lead to robust community engagement. Our 4th part of the African Philanthropy series is now available. Listen to another episode in the 'What if' series where we discuss the future of African Philanthropy and its vast potential to contribute towards Africas development. This conversation highlights emerging opportunities for giving from a growing African middle-class, an engaged and connected youthful population and the growing impact of African multinational corporations through corporate social responsibility channels. The conversation gives an interesting take on the potential of African philanthropy, painting a picture of profound potential for transformation through locally raised resources, congealed around locally relevant frameworks of development. The philanthropy ecosystem is made up of various players including fund intermediaries that receive huge grants for onward re-granting to smaller local entities. But what is the role of these intermediaries in the African philanthropy ecosystem? Well, Tendai Murisa unpacks how intermediary organisations play several unique roles including: • They interpret the landscape, bringing cohesion and understanding to resource flows on the continent, • They are convenors of actors in the philanthropy space and have the unique role of facilitating dialogue between actors, critiquing local and international practices to formulate the "African best practice", • Intermediaries have the added advantage of proximity to both large foundations and smaller local expressions of philanthropy, uniquely infleuncing both, •They have the unique capacity to innovate for how funds are mobilized and used in Africa now and in the future.
