About

Genius Annotation

“Mrs. Potato Head” talks about plastic surgery, insisting that even if pretty does hurt, it’s probably not worth it to start cutting and pasting because one may regret trying to make themselves into something they are not. This is Melanie’s favorite song from her debut album Cry Baby.

She explained the message of the song to VICE:

[Cry Baby]’s becoming more confident and comfortable in her own skin, so she’s forming opinions. I had the idea for “Mrs. Potato Head” for a long time and the whole visual I had in my head was the fact that you can pull toy pieces off the face and that could represent plastic surgery. It was not me bashing women who get plastic surgery, but more of, “Why are you doing this when you’re beautiful without it?”

The official music video premiered on December 1, 2016. The story and illustration for this song appears on the 25th page of the Cry Baby storybook, reading:

One day she turned on the TV
Mrs. Potato on the screen
Showing off her surgeries
She thought that her pain meant beauty

What has Melanie Martinez said about the song?
Genius Answer

Martinez told Fuse:

‘Mrs. Potato Head’ was the hardest song to write on the album. I had the idea for it for a while, just the title and the comparison to how you can, you know, change the pieces of Mrs. Potato Head’s face, and how that can double as a meaning for changing how you look. I think it was the hardest song to write just because I didn’t want it to come off as, you know, bashing people who get plastic surgery in any way, because that wasn’t the point. The whole point was, changing how you look isn’t gonna fix your insecurities.

She also told Noisey:

[Cry Baby is] becoming more confident and comfortable in her own skin, so she’s forming opinions. I had the idea for ‘Mrs. Potato Head’ for a long time and the whole visual I had in my head was the fact that you can pull toy pieces off the face and that could represent plastic surgery. It was not me bashing women who get plastic surgery, but more of a ‘Why are you doing this when you’re beautiful without it?’

When and how was this song created?
Genius Answer

I was in L.A. and there were a lot of people who had plastic surgeries, plastic faces. I always write down random things that relate to childhood in my phone, like themes and titles. I had “Mrs. Potato Head” written down and I immediately thought about changing pieces to a face.
