You call me on the telephone, you feel so far away
You tell me to come over, there's some games you wanna play
I'm walkin' to your house, nobody's home
Just me and you and you and me alone
[Pre-Chorus]
We're just playin' hide and seek
It's gettin' hard to breathe
Under the sheets with you
I don't wanna play no games
I'm tired of always chasin'
Chasin' after you
[Chorus]
I don't give a fuck about you anyways
Who ever said I give a shit 'bout you?
You never share your toys or communicate
I guess I'm just a playdate to you
[Verse 2]
Wake up in your bedroom and there's nothin' left to say
When I try to talk, you're always playin' board games
I wish I had monopoly over your mind
I wish I didn't care all the time
We're just playin' hide and seek
It's gettin' hard to breathe
Under the sheets with you
I don't wanna play no games
I'm tired of always chasin'
Chasin' after you
[Chorus]
I don't give a fuck about you anyways
Who ever said I give a shit about you?
You never share your toys or communicate
I guess I'm just a playdate to you
[Bridge]
Ring around the Rosie
I never know, I never know what you need
Ring around the Rosie
I wanna give you, wanna give you what you need
[Chorus]
I don't give a fuck about you anyways
Who ever said I give a shit about you?
You never share your toys or communicate
I guess I'm just a playdate to you
About
“Play Date” is a song that paints a picture of adult situations within childlike settings. It tells the story of Cry Baby feeling like she’s nothing more than a friend to someone who seems to care very little about her, even though they get together quite often.
She wishes she didn’t care about how little he communicates or how much she has to chase after him, but by the end of the track, she admits that she values their playdates and does care.
It’s one of the three featured tracks from the deluxe version of Melanie Martinez’s debut studio album, Cry Baby. This is the shortest released song overall, at only two minutes and fifty-nine seconds. According to Melanie, this song is difficult for her to perform live due to the fact that
she can’t hit all of the high notes. This song replaced the unreleased song “Half Hearted” as part of a last-minute change.
Along with “Teddy Bear” and “Cake”, these songs are not part of Cry Baby’s story, despite being on the deluxe version of the album. But, she still is the main character in them.

Martinez' memory of recording the song:
I was in New York in a studio in midtown smoking weed and I wrote it pretty quickly. Jennifer Decilveo co-wrote it with me and I just remember us screaming that chorus with excitement. I felt it was a precise and complete expression of the feeling of wanting more than just a superficial connection with someone. Seeking an authentic, pure and genuine connection. It makes sense to me that during this time of isolation that people are resonating with a song that is about wanting to connect with others.

In an interview with Idolator on May 8, 2020, Martinez says a music video for the song will be shot at home and released, despite the song being released five years ago in 2015:
I’m actually writing a music video right now and then going to gather the things necessary to make it and shoot it at home.
The song gained popularity in May of 2020 from TikTok.
