AFTERCARE is Nessa Barrett’s long-awaited sophomore album, released on November 15, 2024.
Initially set to be a jazz album, Barrett later confirmed on February 22, 2024 that it had became “a beautiful messy symphony of music [she] made” and that there would be “no boundaries” for the music. On May 16, Barrett revealed that she had scrapped all songs she previously made for the album from 2023-early 2024, and started fresh. The album was confirmed to be completed on June 20 via TikTok, with the official announcement coming on October 11 via social media.
The album’s title, aftercare, has been defined by Barrett as “emotional intimacy after sex”. Barrett felt this title fit the world she created with this project perfectly as it allowed her to make the sexually-charged songs, such as “PORNSTAR” and “S.L.U.T.”, but still have room for more vulnerable songs like “EDWARD SCISSORHANDS” and “HEARTBEAT”.
On July 2, 2024, Barrett confirmed the release date for the first single, “PASSENGER PRINCESS”, for July 26. The second single, “DIRTY LITTLE SECRET”, which is known to be “one of [Barrett’s] favs off the album”, was released alongside its music video on September 20. The third single, “DISCO”, was announced on October 11, to be released a week later, alongside the album’s name and release date.
Apple Music features an animated artwork for this release.
My writer, Madi, had brought an amazing point up to me and she was like, ‘Nessa, like you’re an artist that can make Adele sad music but also hot girl music that makes people want to feel sexy and I feel like AFTERCARE just embodies all of that,’ because it has the sex appeal but as well as the emotional rawness to it. And this album, conceptually, is very different than anything that I’ve ever written before. It’s very edgy, it’s kind of vulgar, it’s out there. I really took a risk.

I feel like I really learned how to have fun and own who I am through the process of making ‘AFTERCARE’. This music is definitely the most fun and dancey music I’ve ever made, and I’m really grateful I was able to explore new sounds, themes, and parts of myself that I hadn’t necessarily known before making this project. I learned that I can be confident and empowered, feel hot + sexy, and own that truly for the first time it feels like.

I basically started my whole album from scratch like a few times but my album’s called ‘AFTERCARE’ and I just worked with a bunch of incredible people and we sat down for like 2 months and really put it together. And I’ve never been so fond of my music and I’m like genuinely excited for it to be released. […] I feel like you have like a gut instinct, I feel like when it comes to writing songs whatever is going through your life, I feel like for a while I was like uninspired. And so this was the first time where, from my old music I usually wrote from like struggles that I was going through and personal experiences and when that kind of runs out, you know? And, like, no bad things are happening in your life, this is the first time that I kind of like created this character and it helped me write 15 tracks um and put an album together and it’s really fun to like feel so connected to the music without knowing that it’s not really very personal to you, you know? It’s more fun.

The whole album ended up being a seamless story of this very toxic relationship and it goes from being desperate and craving love and affection and being needy into finding this newfound confidence and being independent and feeling empowered in yourself and so, it tells the whole story.
