An Ayrshire dairy farm has reiterated their commitment to organic, additive-free milk amidst controversy around Bovaer.
Mossgiel Farm, located in Mauchline, well known for their small-scale and eco-friendly approach to farming, took to social media in a bid to empower customers in the choices they make when buying food and dairy products.
Run by Bryce Cunningham, the farm recently launched the UK’s most expensive coffee at £272 in a bid to raise funds for a zero-waste dairy facility.
Bovaer is an additive used in cow feed to reduce methane emissions from cattle that has been approved for use in the UK.
The Food Standards Authority (FSA) have said that milk from cows given Bovaer is safe to drink following rumours and misinformation online and on social media.
Arla Foods have announced that 30 of their farms across the UK will test the additive.
However, Mossgiel Farm want people to vote with their feet and choose additive-free products as “big food” and “big dairy” is being called out.
Regardless of thoughts and opinions of Bovear, they have said that people should tell producers how “you want your food produced” and not the other way around.
Posting on Facebook, Mossgiel Farm said: “It’s time to take our industry back.
“Agree or disagree with the Bovaer storm, there’s one thing that’s shining as bright as a supermarket neon sign at midnight - big food is being called out.
“For years our superfood has been devalued. It’s story removed by supermarket ‘standardised’ marketing and peeps in suits in a race to the bottom of prices to make their profit sheets look better, and no care for how things are produced other than to shift blame from them if anything doesn’t go their way.

“Now, we have an opportunity to do something about it.
“Do some research on small-scale, and organic. Call out the faceless brands, and tell big food how you want your food produced - not how they want to sell it to you.
“Shout that you want the name of the dairy on the label, not hidden so the supermarket can swap suppliers for the cheapest version at the drop of a hat.
“Every pound you spend is a vote for the world you want to live in. It’s up to you to make a difference now but it does need a tiny little bit more effort.

“This isn’t just a dig at Arla, this has been an issue simmering for 40 years. It’s time for change.”
The Food Standards Agency says that milk from cows given Bovaer is safe to drink. The additive is metabolised by the cows and does not pass into the milk.
