AMBER Lab of New York University Abu Dhabi at ACI Middle East Conference 2025: From Gray to Green! Proud to have represented New York University Abu Dhabi as an academic partner at the ACI Middle East Conference 2025 in Dubai. A highlight of the event was ACI Vice President Scott Anderson presenting a memento to Padmaja Krishnan, recognizing NYUAD’s role in advancing research and education in construction materials. At the AMBER Lab booth, our team—Padmaja Krishnan, Nouran E., Amna Al Mheiri, and Kemal Celik—engaged with visitors on low-carbon cement technologies, circular economy solutions, and novel construction materials. The mission of Advanced Materials and Building Efficiency Research Laboratory (AMBER Lab) is to tackle pressing societal issues through fundamental and practical research in innovative and new construction materials. Our research interests encompass a wide range from materials characterization, mechanical and durability assessment to building applications and development of sustainable urban infrastructure. Our research areas include morphology and mechanical property study of hydration products, valorization of Mg(OH)2 from waste brine for production of carbon-neutral MgO cement, accelerated CO2 curing of reactive MgO cement, structure and electrochemical characterization of passive film of carbon steel in concrete, 3D printing of ultra-lightweight concrete, feasibility assessment of seawater use in concrete production, and development of an experimentally validated geopspatial computational thermodynamic model for cities.

We're excited to share two recent publications in sustainable construction materials. 1️⃣ 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗥𝗠𝗖)-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝟯𝗗 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀 This study investigates the potential of cenospheres as a lightweight filler in RMC composites, enhancing both carbonation and thermal insulation. By incorporating cenospheres, we achieved a 16% reduction in density and a 59% reduction in thermal conductivity, paving the way for more sustainable 3D printing applications.
