🇵🇹📜 Did you know the Portuguese forestry sector is vital in the global market? 🔬🌱 Over several decades, with innovative collaborations and projects, Portugal has continuously committed to innovation and sustainability in the forestry sector, particularly in the paper and board industry. The BIO-LIGNE project, led by the Instituto Politécnico da Guarda, transforms lignin, a paper pulp by-product, into nanocapsules for drug delivery, showcasing the circular economy's potential. RAIZ, the Forest and Paper Research Institute, is a partnership between The Navigator Company and Portuguese universities that develops sustainable solutions. Named one of Portugal's most innovative organisations in 2024, RAIZ developed 12 new patents and advanced eco-friendly technologies. At the Universidade de Coimbra, researchers are optimising wood pretreatment using ligninolytic fungi, reducing energy and chemical usage in paper pulp production, reinforcing the sector's commitment to sustainability. 🌍🌿In a groundbreaking move, Portuguese researchers are turning coastal algae into bioplastic, an eco-friendly material with fertilizing properties. This innovative project, led by Raquel Vaz, Isabel Cunha, and Isabel Oliveira from the Universidade de Coimbra and CIIMAR, addresses two critical challenges: the accumulation of algae along the coast and the issue of non-biodegradable plastics. The bioplastic developed by the team can decompose and even enrich agricultural soils, contributing to both environmental sustainability and the circular economy. This project further strengthens Portugal's commitment to sustainable solutions. It tackles plastic pollution and transforms marine resources into valuable, sustainable products for society. Over the past decade, the sector has invested more than €160 million to reduce emissions, improve water efficiency, and advance sustainable technologies—setting a benchmark for environmental responsibility. Portuguese paper and pulp products are exported to over 180 markets, with Spain, France, and Germany as primary destinations. 🚀🌐 However, emerging markets like China and India are experiencing unprecedented growth, highlighting Portugal's forestry sector's global appeal and competitiveness.
