The Alpine Convention is leading the way for sustainable life in the Alps.
Info
The Alps are a fascinating and spectacular mountain range spanning eight countries: Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland. The challenges facing this unique mountain range are often cross-border in nature, and can be solved best through cooperation. Recognising this, the eight Alpine countries, together with the European Union, formed the Alpine Convention to address these challenges together. The Alpine Convention is leading the way for sustainable life in the Alps and is a pioneer of its kind as the first international treaty aimed at the sustainable development and protection of a cross-border mountain range.

The Alpine Convention's Soil Protection Working Group has been working on many relevant topics over the past years - in its 2021-2022 mandate, for example, it focused on promoting sustainable soil management 🌱♻️ To support this effort, the Alpine Convention provided additional translations of the FAO's Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management. The guidelines are now available in French, German, Italian, and Slovenian, making them more accessible to a wider audience. 🔗 You can find all the language versions on our website: https://loom.ly/ccpBkUE #SustainableSoilManagement #SoilProtection #AlpineConvention

🌄 Tourism in the Alps is not just about breathtaking views - it is about building a future that balances nature, culture, and economy. Today is Global Tourism Resilience Day, a chance to reflect on and celebrate the resilience of Alpine tourism and the projects that make it sustainable! Approximately 120 million people visit the Alps each year, presenting both an opportunity and a challenge. While tourism is a major source of income for the region, the influx of visitors can also affect local communities, making it essential to adopt a balanced approach through sustainable tourism. This goal is enshrined in the Alpine Convention’s Tourism Protocol, which commits the Contracting Parties to adopt measures to encourage more sustainable tourism, taking into account the interests of both local populations and tourists 📜 💡 There are many examples of how more resilient and future-oriented models of tourism are being implemented across the Alpine region – the project BeyondSnow or the Mountaineering Villages initiative are just two examples. 🏔️ The International Year of Glaciers' Preservation has officially begun! The United Nations has dedicated this year to glaciers, one of the most iconic yet fragile mountain landscapes. Glaciers are crucial for our climate and water cycles but extremely vulnerable to the impacts of a heating planet 🌡️ The Alpine Convention will be supporting various initiatives throughout the year, and the Italian Presidency (Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica) will pay special attention to the topic, in particular by dedicating the 11th Report on the State of the Alps to Alpine glaciers, permafrost, and the water cycle 📄💧 We look forward to celebrating this special year with our mountain partners around the world!
