🌎 BESS co-location with Dorfmühle Hydropower Plant for flexibility marketing The transition to a sustainable and resilient energy system requires innovative approaches that integrate renewable energy sources with advanced storage technologies. EVN Naturkraft’s Dorfmühle small hydropower plant has taken a significant step in this direction by incorporating a co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This integration aims to enhance grid stability, optimize energy management, and improve resource utilization. The storage system features first-life LFP battery racks with a capacity of 0.6 MW/1.2 MWh and a 400V connection point. The Dorfmühle small hydropower plant generates over 10 million kWh of electricity annually, meeting the energy needs of more than 3,000 average households in the municipalities of Kematen/Ybbs, Allhartsberg, and Haag. In addition to providing renewable energy, the site also serves as a peaceful nature reserve. 💻 By integrating renewable energy with storage, the hybrid system will provide grid services through participation in the Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR) market, while simultaneously trading energy in the day-ahead and intraday markets. 🔋 Use case of BESS co-location with wind and PV in Trumau, Austria The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is situated alongside EVN's Trumau photovoltaic plant and the nearby Tattendorf wind farm. This hybrid system owned by EVN Naturkraft is designed to deliver clean energy services, supplying green electricity to approximately 13,000 households. The Tattendorf wind farm has a 16 MW capacity and has generated over 330 million kWh of green electricity. The Trumau photovoltaic plant has a 10 MW capacity and supplies power to around 3,000 households. 💻 CyberGrid's state-of-the-art solution CyberNoc is leveraged to optimise the hybrid renewable energy system. Through our virtual power plant, we seamlessly integrate the assets into the energy market, enhancing grid stability and supporting a more resilient energy system. At the same time, we drive profitability by optimizing the value of energy storage and renewable generation, enabling better demand response and more efficient use of available resources. 📈 The operational strategy for the Trumau BESS includes the use of a certain percentage of its cycles for balancing services, and another portion for optimization of energy trading on the day-ahead and intraday markets. It is anticipated that the BESS will cycle approximately twice per day. ⚡ The energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by ambitious decarbonisation targets, the increasing adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs), and the advancement of smart grid technologies. A crucial element in this evolution is the IEEE 2030.5 communication protocol, which facilitates secure and reliable communication between DER devices and energy service providers. CyberNoc, a state-of-art flexibility management platform developed by CyberGrid, is leveraged for flexibility monetization during the InterSTORE project by utilizing the enhanced IEEE 2030.5 protocol. Through its deployment in InterSTORE use cases, CyberNoc enabled the maximization of self-consumption and the monetization of additional flexibility in various markets. 📈 The primary goal of the flexibility monetization use case is to enable customers to generate revenue from flexibility services. To achieve this, the aggregator deploys and operates a flexibility management platform, which aggregates and manages flexibility from various sources. The flexibility will primarily be provided through power curtailment set points sent to DERs in real-time, in combination with other flexibility sources such as loads, renewable energy sources, and distributed generation. The IEEE 2030.5 standard plays an important role here, as it supports the seamless integration of a wide range of assets. The platform autonomously bids these hybrid flexibility products into the most suitable markets, including balancing services and intraday trading, thus executing the provision of flexibility. 🌐 In the energy community use case, the CyberNoc VPP will be further developed to address the specific needs of energy communities. This additional development is driven by the potential for energy communities to generate real-time data from electricity meters connected to renewable energy sources, consumption sites, battery storage systems, heat pumps, and more. These sources can provide electric flexibility that can be utilized locally within the community, enabling self-sufficiency, or supporting different electricity markets. The integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems is becoming increasingly critical in mitigating the intermittency of renewable generation, enhancing grid stability, and supporting ambitious climate objectives. 📈 Energy storage installations reached a new record in 2024 with 205 GWh installed globally, marking an impressive 53% year-over-year growth, as stated by Energy Storage News. Grid-scale batteries are expected to represent the largest share of storage growth globally. While the residential sector accounted for over half of the installed battery capacity in Europe in 2024, the share of grid-scale batteries was projected to take over by 2028, as stated by Solar Power Europe. The latest SolarPower Europe report highlights Austria’s increasing deployment, with annual installations expected to reach 3.9 GWh by 2028. 📊 At CyberGrid, we conduct comprehensive assessments of BESS feasibility by projecting revenues from day-ahead market optimization and balancing services, enabling businesses to maximize economic returns while supporting grid flexibility.
