Belgium Joins PICASSO: Transforming balancing markets across Europe 🌍 Belgium’s integration into the PICASSO platform is another milestone in Europe’s journey toward a unified and efficient balancing market. PICASSO (Platform for International Coordination of Automated Frequency Restoration Reserves) enhances cross-border energy balancing to ensure grid stability ⚡ and economic efficiency 💶. Countries already connected to PICASSO include: Austria, Germany, Czechia, 💡 New joiners: Denmark (joined 11th October), the Netherlands (17th October), Slovakia (5th November) 🛠️ Future participants: France, Poland and Spain Each nation brings unique dynamics to the platform, influenced by their balancing strategies and grid conditions. The Netherlands saw an initial 50% drop in imbalance price volatility after joining 🎯, demonstrating the potential benefits of cross-border cooperation and innovative pricing strategies. While Belgium’s long-term outcomes remain to be seen, this move offers a promising opportunity to strengthen energy security 🔒, optimize pricing 💡, and support a sustainable grid 🌱. Belgium’s accession reflects the EU’s broader vision of integrated energy markets 🤝, setting the stage for a resilient and interconnected energy future. 💡 Our CEO Juergen Mayerhofer spoke to energate about the right way to go about building a business case for #BESS. In short, it's all about optimization for maximum revenue with minimum degradation. Here are some key takeaways: ⚡ The market currently focuses mainly on the revenue component, which leads to the mindset of maximizing revenues within the warranty terms. The reality is that degradation affects not only available capacity (MWh) but also system efficiency.    ⚡ What everybody knows is the “planned” degradation laid out in the warranty terms. Some asset owners want to maximize returns as fast as possible; some want their battery to live as long as possible. So, while there is a general awareness, other topics like financing tend to overshadow the degradation issue.    ⚡As an optimizer, we recommend collecting cell-specific data from day one, not just as optimization input but also for documentation. Saving on degradation now means higher profits in the future. That is why an optimization strategy should be cell-specific and span the total lifetime of the battery.
