Ahead of #Paris2024, we attended the ‘Change the Game’ Conference at UNESCO headquarters this week. 🌍 These are our 6 key takeaways 👇 1️⃣ The Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University found that for every £1 spent in sport, there is a social return of up 3x for the English economy and society. Sport’s cost-effectiveness in enabling many other SDG’s remains understated. 💹 2️⃣ 64% of countries allocate less than 2% of their national education budgets to physical education and only 44% of PE teachers in primary schools are specialists. Teachers need to be better equipped to make sport inclusive and relevant to topics like climate change that are linked with participation. 🌍 3️⃣ Despite Paris 2024 being the first Olympics in history to achieve gender parity amongst athletes, sport remains one of the sectors with the widest gender gaps. Judicial process on gender violence, integrating survivors of abuse into sport and decision-making processes, and increasing the number of women in leadership positions all need to be improved. 🤝 4️⃣ Outside major sports events like the Olympics, female athletes only receive 5% of all sports news coverage. Women’s share of coverage could reach 20% by 2025. It’s our job in the communications industry to advocate for equitable media coverage and representation of female athletes. 📺 5️⃣ To move away from fragmented policymaking in social sport initiatives, data collection needs to be refined. This will support strategic investment and provide an evidence-base to support governments and academia. 📒 6️⃣ “The challenge is to act before being affected personally.” – Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Physical Activity, Canada 💬 #sustainability #olympics #changethegame
