Back in London after three weeks in South Korea covering stories about all aspects of the Winter Youth Olympics in Gangwon, enjoying great collaborations across multiple teams and experiencing a country that is extremely rich in terms of culture, food and nature. It was fun to see the future stars of winter sport competing in the world-class Olympic venues from 2018 – a few to keep an eye on include: - The Korean figure skater Kim Hyungyeom (pictured), who earned a new fan club by leaping from 3rd to 1st with a brilliant free skate in the men's singles - Angel Daleman, streets ahead of the competition with three individual gold medals and the latest in the Dutch production line of speed skating stars - Lee Chaeun, who passed up the X Games to compete in his home country and won snowboard gold in halfpipe and slopestyle - Maja Waroschitz, a triple gold medallist for Austria in Alpine skiing with the personality to match There were also history-making medallists from Thailand and Tunisia who had graduated from the New Horizons programme (a legacy from PyeongChang 2018) and gold medallists from New Zealand and Slovenia who are on Olympic Solidarity scholarships to Milano Cortina 2026. We covered their achievements here: https://lnkd.in/eQa_CuVe https://lnkd.in/e6KsJpu6

An amazing weekend of sport, particularly in cricket and tennis, but I have been fully immersed in the Winter Youth Olympic Games, watching the next generation of winter athletes in sports like figure skating and speed skating. Away from the competition, the 14 to 18-year-old athletes participate in an education programme covering topics like anti-doping and digital storytelling, but also mental health, which I thought was interesting. It's presented as part of a holistic approach to athlete well-being, which also includes injury prevention and mindfulness, with the aim of normalising conversations around the topic and presenting mental health as of equal importance to physical health. "When I was an athlete 10 years ago, that was not a conversation we could have," Canadian short track coach Elizabeth Ward told me.
