A new study led by ANU reveals a concerning trend: information about scientists’ financial motives is decreasing trust in science.   Lead author Dr Kimin Eom from the ANU College of Business and Economics explains that, as funding from the tech industry increases, there is a risk that people could perceive researchers as serving the interests of the private sector. “If trust in scientists decreases, we lose an opportunity to guide public action on critical issues such as the safety of vaccines,” he says. “Maintaining trust in science and scientists is something policymakers and governments should pay close attention to and manage carefully. Instead of giving complete control to the industry, collaboration among private companies, academia and government will help ensure that science reflects the interest of a broad range of stakeholders, including society as a whole.” Read more about the implications of his findings here: https://lnkd.in/g5qGz2d8

Following up on this tradition, Dr Aditya Balasubramanian from the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences is conducting the first-ever study of post-colonial roadbuilding in India. Why roads? Because they have spurred unprecedented economic progress in the country over a compressed period of time, while also raising important questions about environmental sustainability. As Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner, India’s successes (and missteps) in this space hold valuable lessons, especially as Australia invests in infrastructure projects across the Pacific through its international development policy. Leading the world-first Wiyi Yani U Thangani Institute for First Nations Gender Justice at The Australian National University with an ambitious change agenda, Dr June Oscar AO is advocating the voices of First Nations women and girls through research and practice.   “Women are doing the vast work of holding families together, managing conflict and helping heal from trauma. The Australian National University PhD student Hamid Farahmandian is currently on exchange at Oxford University, thanks to his passion for the famously complex novel Finnegans Wake. 🎓✨ Focusing on the intersection of orientalism, language, philosophy, and history in Ireland, particularly in James Joyce’s works, Hamid’s niche interest earned him the prestigious Oxford PhD Exchange (ANU to Oxford University). 📚    “The Oxford exchange is a huge milestone for me, and I’m excited to experience the rich literary history of the UK.
