A new study led by ANU reveals a concerning trend: information about scientists’ financial motives is decreasing trust in science. Lead author Dr Kimin Eom from the ANU College of Business and Economics explains that, as funding from the tech industry increases, there is a risk that people could perceive researchers as serving the interests of the private sector. “If trust in scientists decreases, we lose an opportunity to guide public action on critical issues such as the safety of vaccines,” he says. “Maintaining trust in science and scientists is something policymakers and governments should pay close attention to and manage carefully. Instead of giving complete control to the industry, collaboration among private companies, academia and government will help ensure that science reflects the interest of a broad range of stakeholders, including society as a whole.” Read more about the implications of his findings here: https://lnkd.in/g5qGz2d8

At The Australian National University, we continue our proud legacy of pioneering Asia-Pacific research to help Australia navigate its relationships with key regional partners. Following up on this tradition, Dr Aditya Balasubramanian from the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences is conducting the first-ever study of post-colonial roadbuilding in India. Why roads? Because they have spurred unprecedented economic progress in the country over a compressed period of time, while also raising important questions about environmental sustainability. As Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner, India’s successes (and missteps) in this space hold valuable lessons, especially as Australia invests in infrastructure projects across the Pacific through its international development policy. We're excited to share that four ANU researchers have been announced as Superstars of STEM by Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic MP. Please join us in congratulating Dr Alison Bentley, Dr Sarah Clement, Dr Georgy Falster and Dr Amanda Parker! 👏 Between them, our stellar scientists study crop science and plant breeding, biodiversity loss, natural disasters, climate change, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Superstars of STEM aims to smash society’s gender assumptions about scientists and increase the public visibility of women and non-binary people in STEM. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/gpjDTDj2

Leading the world-first Wiyi Yani U Thangani Institute for First Nations Gender Justice at The Australian National University with an ambitious change agenda, Dr June Oscar AO is advocating the voices of First Nations women and girls through research and practice. “Women are doing the vast work of holding families together, managing conflict and helping heal from trauma. It is the ambition of the Institute to elevate this knowledge to reconstruct the social fabric impacted by colonisation,” Oscar says. Leveraging the Institute's partnerships with research bodies, government agencies and international human rights organisations, Oscar is dedicated to driving systemic change for Indigenous gender justice. ANU researchers are shooting for the stars – and Dr Elise Stephenson is no exception. ✨ Funded by the Australian Research Council, her research is helping navigate gender (in)equality in emerging policy frontiers: from Artificial Intelligence (AI), to space and climate change. “Ultimately, all I want is for every human to have freedom, safety, be free from violence, respected and treated with dignity. No matter what the domain is,” she says. Once unsure of her path, Elise is today shaping policies that could redefine life on Earth – and far beyond. Curious about how she’s engineering a more equal future across the galaxy? 👩🚀 👉 Read her story here: https://lnkd.in/gKhbeRNr Dr. Elise Stephenson GAICD ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) Global Institute for Women's Leadership - ANU The Australian National University

The Australian National University PhD student Hamid Farahmandian is currently on exchange at Oxford University, thanks to his passion for the famously complex novel Finnegans Wake. 🎓✨ Focusing on the intersection of orientalism, language, philosophy, and history in Ireland, particularly in James Joyce’s works, Hamid’s niche interest earned him the prestigious Oxford PhD Exchange (ANU to Oxford University). 📚 “The Oxford exchange is a huge milestone for me, and I’m excited to experience the rich literary history of the UK. Who knows where it will take me – perhaps I’ll come back with a new literary passion,” he says. Did you know our university vets are not just experts in the clinic but can also support researchers in challenging and unique environments? The Australian National University veterinarian Dr Justin Clarke, with more than 30 years of veterinary experience, recently faced a true test of skill and resilience – performing surgery on a shark while hanging off the side of a boat, battling seasickness! 🤢 🌊🦈 This hands-on experience is crucial to help university vets understand the real-world challenges that researchers encounter in the field. By immersing themselves in these conditions, our vets gain valuable insights that help shape ethical research practices and improve animal welfare.
