APR.Intern reposted this
Last year was a busy year, and I haven't posted much (read: at all) about what I got up to, therefore I present my 2024 Career Wrapped: 👩🏫🧪 In February, I took on the role of Unit Coordinator for Foundations of Chemistry in The University of Western Australia School of Indigenous Studies' Aboriginal Orientation Course. Teaching a unit that was completely new to me (with only a week to prepare) was a challenge, but I quickly learnt how to organise and run a course effectively and to simply allow my passion for Chemistry to infect others. I thank the SIS staff for their support and the students for their enthusiasm, determination and passion. 🍻🔭 After volunteering for Pint of Science Australia in 2023, I stepped up to the role of Perth City Coordinator. It was my first experience with event management and marketing, and I even got the opportunity to discuss the festival's goals and lineup live on ABC Radio. My team of volunteers and I put on an incredible festival, bringing local science to the public with two SOLD OUT nights at The Paddington Ale House. Thank you to all of our wonderful speakers, our audiences and especially to my fellow volunteers. 🎤🫀In June, I gave my first oral presentation at an international conference hosted by the Metabolomics Society in Osaka, Japan. I presented my findings on Lipidomic Associations with Cardiometabolic Disease Risk Factors in Australian Older Adults, a study I have been working with the Busselton Population Medical Research Institute as part of my PhD. The conference was fantastic and I enjoyed soaking up the great research being done in all the different corners of the metabolomics space. ♀️👩🔬 In September, I attended the Women in STEM Education (WiSE) Careers & Entrepreneurship Masterclass, jointly hosted by APR.Intern, Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute and Western Sydney University. This event was a brilliant way to get Women in STEM together to share experiences and thoughts on their careers, and created the perfect environment for real connections between attendees to form. I left Sydney feeling inspired by many of the speakers' career paths and motivations. The best advice I took away was to embrace the power of being a Jack (or Jill?) of All Trades. 🎤🩻 To finish off the year, I represented the Australian National Phenome Centre and the Centre for Computational Systems Medicine by giving both a poster and oral presentation at the Health Futures Institute Symposium, held at Murdoch University. I was overjoyed to receive the Special Commendation award for my oral presentation on Investigating the Lipidomic Associations with Body Composition in the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study. I thank the organisers for putting on a stellar event that fostered connections between the four departments that make up the Health Futures Institute. It was a big year with lots of personal and professional achievements, and I'm looking forward to all that 2025 has in store!
