Established in 1980 and incorporated in Victoria in 1988, AIOH is governed by an elected Council consisting of the President, President Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and three Councillors. The primary objective of AIOH is to eliminate or control workplace health hazards, which it achieves through several key initiatives: Promoting the Profession: Advocating for the field of occupational hygiene across industries, government, and within the broader community. Improving Practice: Enhancing the knowledge, competence, and professional standing of occupational hygiene practitioners. Facilitating Exchange: Providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information related to occupational hygiene. Applying Principles: Promoting the application of occupational hygiene principles to maintain and improve workplace safety and health. Global Representation: Representing the profession both nationally and internationally. As of 2024, AIOH proudly represents over 1,600 members, reflecting its growth and impact in the field of occupational hygiene. What is Occupational Hygiene? Occupational Hygiene is the art and science focused on the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, communication, and control of environmental stressors in or arising from the workplace. These stressors can lead to injury, illness, impairment, or other negative effects on workers' well-being and, in some cases, members of the community. The stressors are typically categorized into Biological, Chemical, Physical, Ergonomic, and Psychosocial factors.
