It was an honour to respresent ASTN - Australian Sports Technologies Network moderating a discussion featuring four of Australia’s most respected experts in sports research and technology: 🌟 John Cairney (The University of Queensland): Ranked #2 for sports related research globally, driving groundbreaking advancements through the Queensland Centre of Olympic and Paralympic Studies (QCOPS). 🌟 Clare Minahan (Griffith University): Championing female athlete health leading the Australian Institute Of Sport Female Performance and Health Initiative and overseeing various PhD's with direct applications of research across high performance sports systems in Australia. 🌟 Stuart Cormack (Australian Catholic University): Leaning on his 25 years of experience in the sector to bridge the gap between academic research and practical application in load management, fatigue, and injury prevention via the SPRINT Research Centre . 🌟 Adam Karg (Deakin University): Pioneering the digital transformation of sport through technology, analytics, and innovation here in Australia and globally partnering with 100+ organisations through the Sport Innovation and Technology (SIT) Lab. The discussion showcased how Australia’s expertise in high-performance sport and India’s growing strength as a global tech and sports powerhouse can come together to drive transformative outcomes. On last week’s Sport’s Cutting Edge episode, Sam Ward, co-founder of Valor Esports told us about his business and its aim to harness the transformative power of esports to drive equality in sport. Esports is a multi-billion-dollar industry that continues its rate of knots growth every year. Sam founded Valor Esports, an Esports training platform, with the goal to allow people from all backgrounds to flourish in this new-found and rapidly growing world. Valor’s two major markets are Australia and the United States, where they partner with Generation Esports, the largest provider of built curriculums for schools. With 2024 coming to an end, Dr Martin Schlegel, Executive Chair, ASTN reflects on the remarkable strides made by ASTN and the broader sportstech sector. For ASTN, our progress and achievements this year is thanks to our strong community of founders, startups, investors, partners and government bodies that we work incredibly closely with. In 2024 alone, we successfully supported and mentored over 30 early-stage founders and growth-stage entrepreneurs. And in total since our first inception, ASTN has supported more than 150 early-stage and 70 growth-stage startups combined through dedicated programs and activities. This year has not only marked a significant milestone for ASTN, but for the industry as well. The sportstech landscape has continued to evolve significantly, now generating A$4.69 billion. This year has been all about ‘connecting the dots’ for our members and partners. ASTN looks forward to continuing to work with our community to position Australia as one of the world’s leading sportstech ecosystems reaching to LA 2028, Brisbane 2032 and beyond.
