We help protect the safety of the Australian community through high-quality education standards and skills assessments.
About us
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) protects the health and safety of the Australian community by: Establishing high quality education standards, assessing and accrediting nursing, midwifery and other healthcare education programs. Assessing and validating the skills, qualifications and experience of overseas qualified nurses, midwives and health care workers to support their skilled migration journey. We work to ensure every nurse, midwife and health care worker commencing work in the Australian community is a safe, culturally aware, and competent practitioner in accordance with current standards ANMAC is the national Accreditation Authority for the nursing profession and the midwifery profession appointed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). As a part of this function ANMAC ensures the development of high-quality education standards and accredits and monitors education programs leading to registration as a nurse or midwife in Australia. ANMAC assesses and validates the skills, qualifications and experience of nurses, midwives and other healthcare workers seeking migration to Australia and provides support to ensure an effective migration journey. ANMAC does this under the authority of the Australian Government. Operating independently from the NMBA, Ahpra, and government departments, we are committed to maintaining the quality and integrity of Australia’s healthcare workforce. Through ongoing collaboration with the nursing profession, the midwifery profession, skilled migrants, education providers, regulatory agencies, and industry stakeholders, we ensure that our work aligns with evolving community needs and standards. Our work is guided by the values of Integrity, Excellence, Collaboration, Innovation, and Respect, which are at the core of everything we do.

This week, ANMAC proudly attended the Parliamentary Friends of Nursing event at Parliament House, part of an important national campaign highlighting the incredible impact of nurses and midwives on Australia’s healthcare system. The campaign, launched by the Australian College of Nursing (ACN) and eight other peak nursing and midwifery organisations, aims to promote nurses and midwives, advocate for their full scope of practice, and showcase the many ways nurses are the solution to the challenges facing Australia’s healthcare system. With support from convenors The Hon Ged Kearney MP, Dr Anne Webster MP, and Dr Helen Haines, and in collaboration with peak nursing bodies, the event showcased the breadth and depth of nursing and midwifery, featuring clinical demonstrations, nurse-led innovations, and meaningful discussions with policymakers. These conversations emphasised how enabling nurses and midwives to work to their full scope can tackle healthcare challenges and deliver holistic, patient-centred care, particularly in primary health care and in rural and regional communities. This campaign is a collaborative effort with the support of peak bodies, including: Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation (ANMF) Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives (CATSINaM) Australian College of Midwives (ACM) Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN) CRANAplus Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery (ANZ) (CDNM) Together, we are raising awareness and building momentum for reform, advocating for a healthier and more equitable future for all Australians. The campaign’s themes skilled, safe, experienced, trusted, and under-utilised, reflect the extraordinary contributions of nurses and midwives. ANMAC is proud to support this campaign and its mission to ensure better access to care for every Australian. Over the last days, ANMAC was pleased to attend the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) annual conference in Cairns, where ANMAC CEO Tanya Vogt, together with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) colleagues - Sarah Fagan, Sam Drew, and Rich Newman, shared key insights on the upcoming Nurse Practitioner Accreditation and Endorsement Standards and workshopped the related definition of Advanced Practice. These standards will aim to ensure registered nurses completing accredited and approved nurse practitioner programs can apply for endorsement as nurse practitioners, supporting the delivery of high quality nurse practitioner led care for the Australian public. It was a valuable opportunity to collaborate with nurses and nurse practitioners. A big thank you to the ACNP for hosting this event. #NursePractitioners #ACNPNationalConference2024 #ANMAC
