It’s not too late to support Baptcare’s Christmas Giving Appeal and support our Home-Start program in Bendigo! Your gift will be used to support families with children under the age of five who are experiencing difficulties, including social isolation, mental health challenges and parenting struggles. Baptcare provides volunteer visiting mentors with lived parenting experience to visit these families, providing one-one-one support, guidance and friendship. Marion, one of our Home-Start volunteers, explains why her work is so important: “There are people out there who are struggling and need help, for all sorts of reasons. I was brought up in a culture of volunteering – ‘do it if you can’ is my motto. I’ve stood beside these families through major life events – from babies being born to a parent having a major accident or medical crisis. My role was to be there for them, talking things over – being a bit of a sounding board. Knowing that I was helping made me feel good, too.” Please donate via the link on our website at: baptcare.org.au/donate/ Or call the Fundraising Team on (03) 8855 4825. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible in Australia. Thank you! #DonateOrShare #ChristmasAppeal #Compassion

Christmas spirit at Wyndham Lodge! Our staff at Wyndham Lodge residential aged care community recently hopped on the Christmas spirit train, bringing their competitive edge for our Christmas decor competition. Residents and their families eagerly joined in, including Jeannette, who was overjoyed to help with the decorations. She added baubles and a touch of sparkling tinsel to her walker. Lois Eunice Yamuta, Registered Nurse at Wyndham, said, “We strive to create a meaningful Christmas experience tailored to each individual resident. For some, it’s about seeing their family members. For others, it’s listening to Christmas songs and carols. For our lovely resident, Jeannette, it’s about being involved in putting up the Christmas decorations.” What gives you joy and meaning at Christmas? Let us know in the comments below. #Christmas #AgedCare #Community

Baptcare Wattle Grove Residential Aged Care community were delighted to celebrate the launch of the Living Well Together (LWT) model of care at their facility recently. Wattle Grove is the third of our 16 Baptcare residential aged care communities to implement the LWT model of care and we are all excited to see the tangible benefits of this evidence-based approach to care. In partnership with Monash University, the LWT program was co-designed and created with residents, families and staff at Baptcare. It is an innovative approach to aged care and we are keen to continue the roll out of this program to all Baptcare residential aged care communities. Our research — like everything else at Baptcare — is about building and supporting communities where every person is valued and respected. That’s why we are delighted to be involved in this vital project, co-designing dementia education with our research partners, residents and their families. A big thank you to everyone involved for their commitment to this innovative program!

Dr. Marta Woolford, PhD and I are excited to share our journey of co-designing dementia education with residents in aged care and their families. Partnering with A/Prof Anita Goh and Robin Harper from National Ageing Research Institute, and the incredible staff, residents, and families at Baptcare homes Brookview and Wattlegrove, we used the world café approach to create Connection Cafes and identify six key dementia topics. A special shoutout to Shannon Storey, who joined us to develop the Connection Cafes content. Over the last two weeks, Shannon piloted the first two topics, "Understanding Dementia" and "Dementia Related Behaviours," at Brookview. The sessions, featuring discussions, interactive activities, and videos, were well received by residents and families. We’re excited to roll out the rest of the education across Baptcare homes. Below is a video detailing our entire project. The dementia education is just the beginning – next, we’ll be implementing blood biomarkers and digital cognitive assessments to aid in the identification and diagnosis of dementia in residential aged care. This phase is in collaboration with the Centre of Research Excellence in Enhanced Dementia Diagnosis (Director Prof Scott Ayton), the Healthy Brain Hub (led by Yen Ying Lim), and Austin Health Memory Clinic (A/Prof Paul Yates and A/Prof Michael Woodward). A huge thank you to Nilu Morawaka and Ben Gatehouse from Baptcare for championing this initiative. Grateful for the support from the National Centre for Healthy Ageing (NCHA) and the Medical Research Future Fund for making this research possible. #DementiaEducation #AgedCare #CoDesign #HealthcareInnovation #TeamWork #Gratitude https://lnkd.in/gqtAqcKq

Our Home-Start Bendigo program is bringing a meaningful difference to families in need. Karina*, one of our program participants, shared details of how transformative this program has been for her family: “The program has helped build my confidence in being a parent. Being able to have conversations with other parents and facilitators where there is no judgement really helped me. My kids were born prematurely and my partner is a FIFO (Fly In Fly Out) worker, so I’m by myself a lot as a solo parent, with not a lot of family around me. Having the support of this program has had a really big impact on my life and the kids’ lives.” Baptcare does not receive government funding for this program – instead, we rely on the generous support of people like you to keep this vital service running and continue to make a meaningful difference. Please support our Christmas Giving Appeal for Home-Start Bendigo, and donate via the link on our website at: baptcare.org.au/donate/ Or call the Fundraising Team on (03) 8855 4825. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible in Australia. Thank you! *Karina is a pseudonym to protect the identify of our program participants. #DonateOrShare #ChristmasAppeal #Community

Amidst the cheery carols and sparkling decorations, Christmas can also be a difficult time for some people. We’d like to revisit a thoughtful reflection by our Head of Spiritual Care, James Lewis, who last year explored the tradition, Blue Christmas. This is a northern hemisphere tradition where Christian churches hold a service on 21 December that makes space to honour people who have lost loved ones. Given the timeless nature of James’ reflection, we’re pleased to share it again with you all now. https://lnkd.in/eHSbNCTu
