Celebrating 30 years of making art, building community & driving change.
About us
Big hART is Australia’s leading arts campaigning organisation, telling Australia’s most invisible stories. Founded in NW Tasmania in 1992, Big hART has now worked with over 50 communities in regional, remote and urban Australia to great acclaim winning 45 awards from Helpmanns to Myer and AFI Awards. We make art, build community and drive change, exposing injustice through powerful campaigns. We use film, theatre, documentary, events, music, podcasts, apps, digital media, augmented and virtual reality to tell powerful stories which ensure that the voice of the powerless influences decision makers. No issue is too hard. Our projects haven driven change in homelessness, addiction, slavery at sea, domestic violence, inequality and intergenerational injustice faced by Indigenous Australians. We initiated and ran the 8 year campaign for copyright justice for Albert Namatjira’s family which saw copyright handed back to the family in 2017. We enable young women to be change-makers in family violence hotspots. We work with isolated communities and prisons and deliver exceptional community driven solutions which are proven, evidence based, long term and innovative.

Last week, as part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence 2024, young people from Project O Frankston met with the Victorian Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, Ms Vicki Ward MP. They discussed their experiences at last year's Walk Against Family Violence, the prevention-themed song they've been creating with Jen Cloher, and continued their advocacy for the importance of young people having a voice at the table when it comes to family violence prevention. Such a worthy meditation. Big hART is honoured to be part of these important discussions, recognised as one of the Australian organisations creating and documenting real impact through arts and creativity thanks to our academic partners who have witnessed, recorded, and critically engaged with our programs.
"The arts, it has been said, cannot change the world, but they may change human beings who might change the world". (Maxine Greene). 🎭 🌏 The keynote speaker at yesterday's excellent Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Creative Learning Showcase, John Nicholas Saunders, PhD, spoke of the evidenced-based outcomes of creativity being embedded in learning curriculums and fostered throughout all stages of childhood and young adulthood. Enhanced academic results, increased learning engagement and attendance, more positive sense of self and belonging, and increased empathy are just a few benefits that extend throughout a person's lifetime. ✅ We saw direct proof of this with insights from students, who eloquently described the significant impact of Creative Learning programs such as the Write Up program and Write Club ✍ Case studies and workshops from Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, FORM - Building A State of Creativity, Southern Forest Arts, Big hART, Centre for Stories, The Art Gallery of Western Australia | AGWA and Sensorium Theatre Inc capped off the day. 👏 We know that the 4Cs of 21st century learning - critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity - will be the attributes that power today's students to become tomorrow's leaders. So it was a great segue to dash across town to Committee for Perth's launch of the Perth 2050 Report, developed in collaboration with Scitech. Led by futurist Dr Ben Hamer, this report is choc-ful of fascinating thinking about what Perth could be like in 25 years, and highlights the need to plan creatively now so that our city retains its 'secret sauce' of vibrancy and liveability.💡 It was great to hear from a group of inspiring high school students - the people who will be leading us when we are kicking back in our retirement homes! - about the factors we will need to consider for a city that is set to grow to 3.5 million people. Young people growing up everywhere are seeking connection and purpose. Skateboarding is an activity that creates a site of positive connection, mental wellbeing, and skill-building for people of every age. If you are interested in seeing how you can bring Skate of Mind to your region or you would like to be involved in the Skate of Mind project, email the project's Creative Producer - Lincoln Smith lincoln@bighart.org or comment below. The Skate of Mind team in Pilbara WA saw droves of young people and their families come and try something new with the Skate of Mind pro skaters, to experiment with making beats with our producer Kyle, and to try filmmaking and photography with Riely Walker. Play and fun was king! Meeting young people and their families where they are, giving them activities that nurture community building, by using their existing infrastructure, and giving them access to materials and education they can use is a rewarding program for everyone involved. We simply wouldn't be able to do this good work without the trust and investment of our sponsors such as Future Generation New Balance Totem Skating and Element Brand Australia. “When quite so often our children are made to fail, or they don’t quite fit the box. The beauty of arts practice is you can’t fail because it’s the very raw authentic you.” Michelle Adams gives this beautiful and authentic address this November at 100Women accepting the grant for the continuation of 'Punkaliyarra' a work that she has lovingly co-created with Big hART. 100 Women Michelle Adams #Punkaliyarra #ArtsPractice #SocialChange #FirstNationsArt #FirstNationsLeadership #WomensLeadership https://lnkd.in/guVWR6uQ

It's important that the efforts and visions of the people of Roebourne and beyond are allowed to stand as examples of what is possible as well as what is probable. We are ever excited by Sarah and her team's academic engagement with the Roebourne community's work. The opening to Sarah's blog posts includes quotes from songs written as part of the 'Songs for Freedom' project, they are plainly worded and show the community's complex understanding of their own position and relationship to the realities of policy, shifting cultural landscapes, and the direct impacts of their environment on them. An interesting read...

Our project team from Skate of Mind has been winding their way to the Pilbara. Yesterday saw them receiving a cultural tour and sharing at some of the important cultural sites. Today the workshopping fun has begun at Roebourne skatepark! All skateboarders are trained in youth work so that they can use skateboarding as a tool for primary prevention, community connection, and mental wellness for young people. Here's a sneak peak at Day 1 of the tour. Future Generation Fortescue Department of Social Services (DSS) #Skateboarding #YouthInitiatives #Pilbara #BigHart #SocialChange
