Sometimes the best research on a city comes from people who are living and breathing it. In the new edition of Urban Scrawl, we get the lowdown from passionate Perth-ite Ray Haeren, Director at Urbis and Deputy Chair at the WA Planning Commission, on his favourite corner of Perth, the best way to spend weekends in Perth and cities doing density well. Speaking about the urban village concept, Ray says, “Urban villages are about having neighbourhoods with density and activity, but also having a distinct identity and sense of community.” “We have a number of these in Perth, with areas like Highgate, Subiaco and Leederville being good examples. We need to think of central Perth as a series of neighbourhoods and curate local identity and sense of place. I think areas like Terrace Road, Brisbane Street, Goderich and West Perth have potential to be developed into distinct localities as we increase the population and intensity of the City.” Read more in your edition of Urban Scrawl – in your inboxes! Committee for Perth, like Gehl - Making Cities for People and City of Perth, has long advocated for bold, ambitious long-term planning. At Monday night’s Urban Insights: Towards 2036 event, members were given a sneak peek into the preliminary findings from the third instalment of Gehl’s study for the City of Perth. It’s a collaboration going back 30 years, with City of Perth engaging Gehl to produce a report identifying major wins and challenges, as well as future recommendations. Gehl principal Tim Watts shared the early insights gathered during their visit to Perth over the summer, before joining Karen Wright from Urbis and Andrew Howe from Element Advisory Part of SLR for a panel discussion facilitated by our CEO Paula Rogers. The panel explored how it takes decades of good decisions to bring a plan to life, from the changes to Perth over the last three decades and the opportunities that lie ahead, from connectivity to the waterfront and attracting more residents and students into the city. We look forward to this conversation continuing with the 2036 Vision due to be released in November. A special thanks to Edith Cowan University for hosting us at the Engagement hub, overlooking the stunning state of the art campus. This development is set to address key recommendations from Gehl’s previous studies, including bringing students into the city when it welcomes 10,000 staff and students in 2026. Committee for Perth’s Urban Insights are city learning journeys. These events explore transformations of precincts and regions, with insights from those driving ideas for change. #committeeforperth #urbaninsights #towards2036 #perth #cityofperth

This will be a game-changer for the CBD! So exciting to see the new plans by Fiveight to revitalise Carillon City. The arcades have been almost dormant for far too long, to the detriment of the Hay & Murray Street Malls. This new development is just what is needed, and has the potential to breathe new life into the city centre and boost the local economy. #perth #perthplanning #committeeforperth
Fiveight has submitted its $400 million-plus proposal to redevelop Perth’s Carillon City, two and a half years on from purchasing the building.
