The use of facial recognition technology for surveillance frequently introduces a conflict between its potential to enhance fraud prevention and detection, and concerns about privacy and fairness. BixeLab is pleased to announce that our CEO, Dr Ted Dunstone, shared his expertise on a recent Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) 7:30 Report, offering a balanced perspective on the opportunities and challenges of biometric technologies in the context of facial recognition. Dr Dunstone highlighted how issues like motion blur, low-quality footage, and biases in recognition can compromise system outcomes. BixeLab assists organisations in effectively managing such risks through accredited and standards-compliant evaluations. Our testing helps ensure that biometric systems are performing reliably and ethically. As the use of facial recognition technology expands, businesses must prioritise fairness and accuracy, and BixeLab is here to assist in that pursuit. BixeLab is pleased to share our recent engagement with the Department of Internal Affairs (NZ) (DIA) to address crucial concerns around bias or fairness within their facial recognition technology, Identity Check. In response to these concerns, DIA commissioned BixeLab to conduct an extensive bias evaluation of Identity Check, specifically assessing if the system's liveness detection and matching algorithms perform consistently across demographic groups with focus on Māori and non-Māori populations. Our examination included; Liveness Detection Performance: We examined the system's effectiveness in distinguishing live users between Māori and non-Māori populations. Matching Engine Performance: We measured the system’s accuracy in correctly matching genuine users and rejecting impostors across both demographic groups. In use of this testing strategy to undertake a Level B Evaluation Assurance, BixeLab aimed to validate the systems "fair performance" for each identified demographic, contributing to DIA's commitment to fair and reliable identity verification. BixeLab is pleased to share our recent completion of an ISO/IEC 30136 aligned evaluation of ZeroBiometrics™’ ZeroFace technology. As an internationally recognised and accredited biometric testing laboratory, BixeLab leverages experience, expertise, and accredited testing methodologies to conduct all of our evaluations, and we pride ourselves in delivering trustworthy, high-calibre, and insightful results. This standard saw our testing focus on the 3 key areas of template diversity, irreversibility, and unlinkability. Template Diversity: The “ZeroHash” produced by ZeroFace exhibited high entropy of 7.89 bits per byte, indicating a high level of randomness and unpredictability, suggesting strong diversity across the tested ethnic groups. Irreversibility: Mutual information analysis between each PI and unsaved precursor code yielded a score of zero, ensuring that reversibility of the transformed biometric data is infeasible. Unlinkability: No correlation was observed between the PI generated from the same user’s transformed biometric data in difference instances of ZeroFace. Using our tried and trusted methods, BixeLab undertook this evaluation and identified that ZeroBiometrics™’ ZeroFace v1.0.0 in alignment with the applicable clauses as specified in ISO 30136 for protecting biometric data through irreversibility, unlinkability, and template diversity.
