This Queensland Women's Week, we stand with all women and girls to #MarchForward toward a gender-equal future where no one is left behind. Systemic inequality, rising violence against women, and economic hardship continue to hold young women back. Too many face impossible choices – between safety and shelter, between their health and daily survival. At Brisbane Youth Service, we see the resilience of young women every day. With safe housing, healthcare and tailored support, they can break the cycle of homelessness and violence, and build new futures with power, choice and opportunity. In light of Cyclone Alfred and the potential for event cancellations, we encourage everyone to stay safe and informed. Many events may be impacted, but the spirit of Queensland Women's Week continues, and we stand together in support of gender equality and economic security. 💪🌟 #QWW25 #WomeninQLD #IWD2025

We are so grateful to the Property Industry Foundation and the dedicated volunteers from Apollo Property Group for their generosity and hard work in transforming the backyard of our Safe Young Mums and Bubs home. Their time, effort and donations have created a welcoming outdoor space where young families can heal, connect and thrive. 🌱 Pam Barker GAICD, CEO of Brisbane Youth Service, joined us to recognise this incredible contribution: "This space will be an important part of our Safe Young Mums and Bubs program, which provides young mothers and their babies with the stability and support they need to rebuild their lives after experiencing homelessness and domestic and family violence," she said. "Through this program, we aim to strengthen the bond between mothers and their babies, equip young mums with the skills to live independently, and reduce the risk of child removal by ensuring they have the support they need to thrive. "Thanks to the Property Industry Foundation and Apollo Property, these young families now have a safe and nurturing outdoor space to grow together." 💜

Across Australia we are seeing a devastating rise in young people accessing support from Specialist Homelessness Services who are at risk or currently homelesss. The Government must continue to invest in Services and strategically increase the allocation of investment in housing to give young people a chance of success. #endyouthhomelessness https://lnkd.in/g2MXsKi3

The new Everybody’s Home ‘Under Pressure’ report highlights what we see every day at Brisbane Youth Service (BYS) – more vulnerable young people than ever before reaching out for urgent support, with demand for frontline services surging. 📈 In FY23-24, we saw a 16% increase in the number of times young people engaged with us compared with the year prior. The lack of safe affordable housing is pushing more young people and young families into homelessness, putting them at greater risk of further violence and trauma. 🏠 At BYS, we are doing everything we can to keep young people safe and young families together and housed. But the reality is, frontline service providers like ours are being stretched to breaking point. 98% of organisations supporting people impacted by Australia’s housing crisis reported an increased workload over the past 12 months with 87% experiencing a further surge in demand since December 2024, according to Everybody’s Home. The rising cost of living, record-high rent prices and a severe shortage of social housing mean that too many young people are stuck in unsafe environments or sleeping rough because they have no other option. We know early intervention and long-term solutions work. The Federal Government must act now by prioritising the National Housing and Homelessness Plan – including a $500 million Homelessness Prevention Transformation Fund and a commitment to building one million new social and affordable homes. Young people deserve safe, stable housing – not just emergency responses. It’s time to move beyond band-aid solutions and invest in real change. 📰 Visit https://lnkd.in/g7xTjRC6 to read the Everybody’s Home ‘Under Pressure’ report. #HousingCrisis #YouthHomelessness #EndHomelessness #EverybodyDeservesAHome

Join us in congratulating the incredible young people at The Nest who recently graduated from our Positive Transitions Program (PTP) Employment Capacity Building Workshop! 🙌 Proudly supported by Brisbane City Council, PTP helps young people in our housing programs build pathways out of homelessness through education, training, employment, and community involvement. Extending this program to young people in crisis at The Nest has already led to inspiring outcomes, including two graduates securing jobs aligned with their career goals. It shows that when young people are empowered with the right tools and opportunities, they can unlock their full potential and build stable, fulfilling futures. 📖 Visit https://lnkd.in/gzyYmdYh to read the full article on our website.

This SBS article highlights why solutions like these are so critical. We commend the QLD Government’s commitment to eight new Youth Foyers, a vital step toward ensuring young people have access to safe, affordable housing. Read more about The Foyer Foundation’s latest hotspot analysis and the importance of Youth Foyers: https://lnkd.in/gYXrn4H5
This week, The Foyer Foundation launched a new analysis that revealed the top 20 hotspots where young people are struggling most to find stable housing, land a job and finish school. In these regions alone there are 17,000 young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Our young people deserve better. #YouthFoyers are an obvious part of the solution. We know they break the cycle of homelessness. Next week, Liz Cameron-Smith and I are headed to Canberra with five former and current Foyer residents to meet with decision makers about funding for #10YouthFoyers We’re confident that when leaders hear about the impact of Foyers on their lives, and look at the evidence - they will support our ask. 🏳️⚧️ To trans people in our community – you are not alone. There’s a lot of news floating around, and we know it can feel overwhelming. But we want you to know that you are seen, valued and supported. Trans young people already face a higher risk of homelessness. An Australian report ‘Writing Themselves in 4’ by Hill and colleagues (2021) found that nearly half of trans people who have experienced homelessness felt their gender identity or sexuality played a role. No one should have to go through this alone. 💬 If you need someone to talk to, please reach out: 📞 QLife – 1800 184 527 📞 Lifeline – 13 11 14 📞 Kids Helpline – 1800 551 800 📞 Suicide Call Back Service – 1300 659 467 📞 Beyond Blue – 1300 22 4636 📞 Headspace – 1800 650 890 At Brisbane Youth Service, we believe every young person deserves a safe place to call home and access to inclusive, affirming healthcare.
