This #WorldCancerDay, we are celebrating Australia’s world-class leadership and impact in cancer care and control. This year’s theme, "United by Unique," highlights the importance of placing people at the centre of cancer care. Over the last 25 years, the cancer care sector and the Australian Government have implemented policies that have contributed to saving more than 107,000 lives. We urge the Government to continue investing in cancer research and key policies, ensuring we don’t lose momentum in advancing cancer care and prevention. Our requests of Government include: •Continue investing in skin cancer prevention campaigns towards a future free from skin cancer. •Working to halt the rise of obesity to reduce the incidence of 13 types of cancer. •Continue investing in campaigns to increase participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program and save more lives from bowel cancer. •Provide equitable access to cancer care by reducing the financial burden of cancer through improved services and support. This summer we have seen some eye-opening trends, including the #sunburn #tanline trend seen on TikTok and social media. Our research confirms that young people are more likely to attempt suntanning and more needs to be done to tackle this issue. #CancerCouncilNSW is hosting the Conquering Skin Cancer film on Wednesday, 5th February at the Orpheum, Cremorne, where I’ll be joined by Anne Gately and Michelle Wong for a Q&A on the "Glamorisation of tanning and the trivialisation of sunburn", with Dr Norman Swan facilitating the discussion. Please share with your networks, especially any parents, educators or sports leaders you know. We need to do more to normalise sun safety in the education and sport sectors, and working together can make a real difference. #cancercouncil #sunprotection #SunSmart
