About us

As WA's leading cancer charity, every day we're working to support families, prevent cancer, and save lives. From providing practical and financial support to West Australians affected by cancer, to speaking out on behalf of the community, stopping cancer before it starts, and finding new ways to better detect, treat and defeat cancer, every minute, every hour, every day we're working towards our vision of a cancer-free future. However, as a not-for-profit organisation we’re reliant on community donations to continue this work. Every time you make a donation, take part in a Relay For Life event, host a Biggest Morning Tea, Girls' Night In or your own fundraiser, buy a Daffodil Day pin or become a regular giver, you're helping us work towards towards our goal of creating a world where cancer’s no longer feared. We can’t do what we do without you, thank you.

State Governments can champion protecting kids from junk food advertising by setting standards for the types of foods and drinks that are advertised on their own property.   I was interviewed by the 7:30 Report about the ongoing work Cancer Council Western Australia leads alongside Western Australian health groups calling on the WA government to implement a policy to restrict unhealthy food and drink advertising from its property, including buses and train stations.   Watch the report here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gSRyyDwB It can be done. The SA Government just announced its policy in January 2025. The Deakin Health Economics research we commissioned showed that a policy in WA would likely be cost saving and health promoting. Read the cost benefit analysis here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gSCqvnmq Research lead by Gina Trapp shows that Perth kids are exposed to junk food marketing outdoors at extreme levels. • Massive thanks to the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation and Lotterywest for their amazing support of our Transport to Treatment Program! Thanks to these incredibly generous grants, we will be able to buy a new Transport to Treatment bus, complete with accessibility modifications, so that we can continue helping country cancer patients and carers to get to essential appointments. We are so grateful for this support.

What an unforgettable milestone! We’re incredibly proud to celebrate 25 years of Make Smoking History. From our first campaign launch in 2000 to today, we’ve remained steadfast in our commitment to reducing the devastating impact of tobacco on our WA community🚭 Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting a pop-up gallery that showcased our journey so far, with a special appearance from Jeff the Diseased Lung. It was a fantastic opportunity to hear from many of our supporters, including those who were part of the campaign from its inception over two decades ago. A heartfelt thank you to Health Minister Amber Jade-Sanderson for joining us and even taking a moment to share a photo with Jeff!   Our work isn’t done yet. As we look toward the future, we’re excited to launch our 17th WA-made campaign, How To Tell You, this Sunday. This new campaign has come about after extensive research with people who smoke, and we are confident it will encourage many more quit attempts.   Our work isn’t done yet. Despite a significant reduction in smoking prevalence over the past 25 years, tobacco remains one of the largest preventable causes of death and disease in Australia.   Make Smoking History is multi-faceted. We have a proven track record in providing comprehensive advice to governments (local, state, and federal) and other organisations on legislative and policy reforms aimed at reducing smoking rates. This work is underpinned by evidence-based, policy-relevant research and strategic collaborations with key stakeholders.   We work with health, community and corrective services which serve priority populations where smoking rates remain high, to identify tailored solutions for addressing smoking at their service and integrate quit support into the work they are already doing. We are proud of this initiative and the impact it is having.   We are also incredibly proud of our work in youth vaping prevention. This work is urgent —young people today are facing new challenges, and we are committed to protecting them from a lifetime of addiction.   The importance of continuing this vital work is as clear as ever, and with your ongoing support, we can continue making a tangible difference in public health. Thank you for being part of this journey! • Yesterday we celebrated 25 years of our flagship tobacco control program, Make Smoking History. Over the past 25 years, we’ve seen smoking rates in WA drop from 24% in 2002 to just 10.9% in 2022. That’s progress, but there’s still more to be done. We know hard-hitting campaigns work, and we are committed to continuing this vital work to help even more West Australians quit smoking. If you or someone you know needs support to quit, visit the Make Smoking History website for helpful resources and tips: https://bit.ly/4aTf8se
