We would like to take this opportunity to extend a special thanks to Joey Laifoo and the team at Island Stars for the use of this stunning photo. • Primary Health Networks (PHNs) were established by the Australian Government in 2015 as a response to the recommendations of the Review of Medicare Locals.   Since PHNs were established, the primary care sector has changed significantly and the role of PHNs has expanded. The Department of Health and Aged Care is initiating a review to examine the PHN Program business model in the context of the changing operating environment, and to ensure the Program is structured to meet Government objectives.   The Department is seeking feedback via written submissions from consumers, frontline health practitioners, commissioned service providers and other interested parties about their experiences with the PHN Program. While the Government also provides support for Australians through a range of other primary care programs and funding streams these are out of scope of this Review.   You are invited to view the Consultation Paper and respond by providing a written submission on the Department of Health and Aged Care Consultation Hub. Responses will be accepted until 11:59PM AEDT on 22 January 2024.

  • 🎀On this World AIDS Day, we honor the remarkable contributions of Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood whose leadership was instrumental in the creation of Condoman—a pioneering First Nations superhero in HIV prevention. In the 1980s, Aunty Gracelyn recognized the need for culturally relevant health education and collaborated with other Aboriginal health workers across Queensland to develop Condoman. This initiative not only empowered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia but also set a global precedent in public health strategies. Today, Condoman remains a powerful symbol of community-driven health promotion, exemplifying the enduring impact of culturally sensitive approaches in combating HIV/AIDS, with recent data indicating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parity with the non-Indigenous Australian population in HIV notification rates. In 2023, an estimated 30,000 people were living with HIV in Australia. Australia reached the important UNAIDS target of 90-90-90 in 2020. We are one of the few countries to do so. This means that in 2020: ☑️91% of people living with HIV had received a diagnosis ☑️Of those diagnosed, 91% were receiving antiretroviral treatment ☑️Of those receiving this treatment, 97% had a suppressed viral load To learn more about Aunty Gracelyn's work to combat HIV/AIDS in our communities, read The Conversation article here - https://lnkd.in/gtB9mW64
