🎀On this World AIDS Day, we honor the remarkable contributions of Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood whose leadership was instrumental in the creation of Condoman—a pioneering First Nations superhero in HIV prevention. In the 1980s, Aunty Gracelyn recognized the need for culturally relevant health education and collaborated with other Aboriginal health workers across Queensland to develop Condoman. This initiative not only empowered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia but also set a global precedent in public health strategies. Today, Condoman remains a powerful symbol of community-driven health promotion, exemplifying the enduring impact of culturally sensitive approaches in combating HIV/AIDS, with recent data indicating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parity with the non-Indigenous Australian population in HIV notification rates. In 2023, an estimated 30,000 people were living with HIV in Australia. Australia reached the important UNAIDS target of 90-90-90 in 2020. We are one of the few countries to do so. This means that in 2020: ☑️91% of people living with HIV had received a diagnosis ☑️Of those diagnosed, 91% were receiving antiretroviral treatment ☑️Of those receiving this treatment, 97% had a suppressed viral load To learn more about Aunty Gracelyn's work to combat HIV/AIDS in our communities, read The Conversation article here - https://lnkd.in/gtB9mW64

I stand in wonder at the different life my clients living with HIV have now to those who lost their lives or the lives of many they loved when I was first starting my nursing career. It is indeed a wonderful reflection on how medicine and those with a passion for improving the health of their community can make a difference ☺️
