As our communities in Northern NSW brace for the impact of Cyclone Alfred, we’re ready to provide shelter and support. Evacuation centres have been established in Tyalgum, Mullumbimby, Kingscliff, Murwillumbah, Ocean Shores, Kyogle, East Lismore, Evans Head, Burringbar and Uki to help you through these challenging times.      At our centres, we will link you with services to help you get back on your feet, including:  ✅ Emergency accommodation  ✅ Psychological first aid and chaplaincy  ✅ Meals  ✅ Essential supplies.   Emergency responders will keep you informed with regular updates, current advice and warnings, and information on when you can safely return home.  Please bring any prescription medication, your prescription and baby care products with you. As always, evacuation centres are a place of last resort – stay with family and friends if you can. Please do not bring donated items to evacuation centres. If you wish to donate, many charities have standing donation mechanisms that you can use to show you care. Stay safe by: • Ensuring you have adequate food, water and critical medical supplies for several days if power goes down. • Do not enter flood waters, ocean or rivers. • If you are located in lower lying areas that are at risk of flooding, consider staying with family or friends on higher ground. • For those located closer to the Queensland border, there are strong wind warnings, be alert for debris. • Ensure your phone is charged, with communications and power networks at risk of going down. • For emergency help in floods or storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.  • Call 000 (triple zero) in case of an emergency.

Today, Victorian Ombudsman Marlo Baragwanath tabled a report in the Parliament of Victoria – 'Support when children are sexually abused at school: The Department of Education's response to abuse in a Victorian primary school'. The investigation was sparked by concern about the way the Department of Education responded to two incidents of child sexual abuse at a Victorian primary school. The investigation identified systemic gaps in the department’s policies, procedures and practices in managing child sexual abuse and found significant flaws in the department’s response including a failure to quickly contact the families concerned, apologise and adequately support the children and their families. The department has now formally apologised to both children. One child’s family has received compensation through a civil claims process and the other child’s family is currently seeking compensation from the department.  There are critical lessons in this investigation for everyone that engages with children and families across the Victorian public sector. Upholding the rights of the child and ensuring effective, victim-centric systems for preventing sexual abuse from occurring – and responding appropriately if it does – must be at the heart of all departmental policies, systems and actions.
