'Never too late' to report abuse Former sports coach facing historical child abuse allegations Detective Sergeant Gilbert said police believed there might be more alleged victims who have not yet come forward. "It's possible that this person has had other contact with children in his position," she said. "So if you've experienced sexual violence or abuse even decades ago, please reach out and speak to police. It's never too late." Read the full article👇 https://lnkd.in/g8fAD6xt

🙌 It has been a pleasure to represent Child Safeguard & participate as a presenter and panellist at the 2nd National Family Safety Summit 2024 in Perth, Australia! I was privileged to join fellow panellists - Conor Pall from Commission for Children and Young People Victoria, Daniel Pisani - Kids First Australia, Sasha Greenoff - Aboriginal Legal Service WA & facilitated by Alison D'Vine to discuss: ‘Creating safe spaces for children beyond home environments to increase safety’. I then delivered a presentation on: 💪 ‘Strengthening child safeguarding practices in organisations to enhance service outcomes’. Child Safeguarding is an incredibly dynamic area. In the past couple of weeks the following has taken place: - The federal government has passed the social media ban for children under 16 - A former childcare worker was sentenced to life* in prison for abuse against 69 children in early learning centres in Brisbane and Italy over almost two decades - A Queensland woman was the first person to be sentenced under the Failure to Protect offence - The high court has ruled that the Catholic Church is not vicariously liable for the abuse by priests. I provided an overview of ✅ Key child safety laws ✅ Best practices & Implementing the Child Safe Standards ✅ Key gaps in Australia & made a call for greater national cohesion and the establishment of a Federal Minister for Children and Young People. Thanks to the team at Third sector & Akolade - Monique Bova - Klarence Lee for facilitating a great event!

A Sunshine Coast woman is one of the first people to be sentenced under new Queensland legislation mandating the reporting of child sexual abuse. The 50-year-old woman, pleaded guilty to one count of ‘failure to report’ belief of a child sexual offence. Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard the woman obtained information in September or October last year leading to a reasonable belief that her husband had sexually abused their eight-year-old daughter multiple times. The court heard the 41-year-old man was arrested in April as a result of another party making a complaint to police. In Queensland it is an offence for an adult not to inform police as soon as reasonably practicable if they believe a child sexual offence is being or has been committed by another adult. 📣 Australia bans Social Media for children Under 16 The federal parliament has passed legislation to ban people under 16 from having an account with some social media platforms. The federal government has ignored concerns voiced including the Australian Human Rights Commission, which said the government rushed the legislation through parliament: “Without taking the time to get the details right. Or even knowing how the ban will work in practice". The ban has overwhelming public support according to a recent poll. More details👇 https://lnkd.in/gQg7u-A5

‼️ Content Warning ‼️ One of Australia's most notorious paedophiles has been sentenced to life in prison after confessing to the child sexual assault of numerous children in daycare centres in Australia and overseas. Former childcare worker Ashley Paul Griffith pleaded guilty in September to more than 300 charges against 69 children in early learning centres in Brisbane and Italy over almost two decades. Judge Paul Smith told the court the offending had a significant impact on the lives of many; "This was very serious, offending in terms of length and scale. The victims were very vulnerable, and there was a significant breach of trust.” https://lnkd.in/gHSUdadi

We are working to create a safer WA for children and young people. From today, all early childhood workers are now legally required to report all reasonable beliefs of child sexual abuse to our Mandatory Reporting Service. They are part of the eight new mandatory reporter groups being introduced in stages over a three-year period following the passing of the Children and Community Services Amendment Act 2021.
