  • Today is International Volunteer Day. Thank you to all the generous volunteers who donate their time and skills to our community, like Dimity, who has been volunteering with our Meals on Wheels service since 2001. It all started when Dimity’s mum bought her a car and said she had better do something useful with it. After 23 years of delivering nutritious meals to people who need it, what keeps her coming back? “I’ve built a relationship with the people I deliver to,” Dimity said. Help us shape the future of volunteering in our local area. Tell us what kind of volunteering experiences you’d like to try. Whether you’ve been lending a helping hand for years or thinking about it for the first time, we want to hear from you. Complete our short survey by Friday 31 January: https://lnkd.in/g2YREYdV [Image description: A woman in a yellow hi-vis vest carries a silver delivery box out of the open boot of a car. Text on image reads: Thank you to our volunteers!]

As the Sydney Star Observer magazine was being sold in 2011, their collection of rare photos spanning over 30 years that captured moments from parades, protests, parties, and community milestones was donated to the City of Sydney Archives. "This collection captures the LGBTIQA+ community’s resilience, from protests and hardships like the AIDS epidemic to moments of joy and unity in celebrations." explains City of Sydney archivist Janet Villata. "It’s a powerful testament to the spirit of advocacy and togetherness through decades of struggle and triumph." From Mardi Gras to DIVA Awards, these images document the fight for equal rights and vibrant community celebrations. A number of these photos are being digitised and made available to the public. • Can disability inclusion be summed up in a simple maths formula? Dwayne Fernandes, champion double amputee stair climber thinks so. Dwayne and Giancarlo de Vera, members of our Inclusion (Disability) Advisory panel, had an entertaining conversation to celebrate International Day of People with Disability. For more than 20 years, Chris Thomas was our manager of design. He was an instrumental force in many of the great Sydney public domain and architecture projects. Following his recent passing, both the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) and Australian Institute of Architects have posthumously honored Chris’s remarkable contribution to the public domain and architecture with the NSW President’s Prize. The AIA award was accepted by Chris’ wife Patricia and children Jake, Hannah and Noah (pictured), to a standing ovation in the room, the only one of the night. Chris guided a complex portfolio of building and landscape projects, and oversaw large teams of designers. Chris was a collaborative, strategic thinker, with exceptional design skills coupled with technical flair. Chris’s strength was in his ability to create a space for designers to achieve their best work. He helped champion quality design across architecture, landscape architecture and public art. At the same time, he showed a deep understanding of the importance of building exceptional and site-responsive projects for our communities. Chris never sought the limelight. We commemorate the life and legacy of Chris and his significant contribution to urban design and the public domain. Sydney will continue to benefit from the expertise he passed onto our team and his commitment and focus on quality.
