We welcome this week’s next big step with our Western Green Energy Hub project in the south-east corner of WA, with go-ahead from the WA Govt to progress to full environmental impact assessment phase. In line with WA and national hydrogen strategies to use Australia’s world-beating wind and solar resource to rapidly scale up green hydrogen production for decarbonising heavy industry, shipping fuel and fertilizer production, the project has the potential to ramp up over time to 50+GW of upstream power and 3.5 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production.  A first stage of the project eyes about 6 GW of upstream green power for renewable hydrogen / green ammonia production in the early 2030s. WGEH is a collaborative project by international renewables and green hydrogen project developers InterContinental Energy and CWP Global, in partnership with Mirning Green Energy Ltd (MGEL), a Traditional Owner-led company and commercial subsidiary of Mirning Traditional Lands Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (MTLAC). MGEL holds a 10% carried interest in the project through to Stage 1 Final Investment Decision, and a permanent board seat at WGEH Pty Ltd. Tim Horneman, CWP’s APAC Regional President, said: “This move into full EIA mode is the culmination of several years of early development work, and careful on-site studies of landscape, flora and fauna, and environmental and cultural heritage surveys.  We look forward to similar progress soon at the Federal level, and to accelerating work to ensure WGEH makes a major contribution towards Australia becoming a Renewable Energy Superpower, and major player in key Asian demand centres for renewable hydrogen, in particular Japan and Korea”.

  • Leaders across the value chain, including e-fuel producers, vessel and cargo owners, ports, and equipment manufacturers, co-created and launched a Call to Action at COP 29 to accelerate the adoption of scalable zero-emission fuels in the maritime industry. Organized by RMI, the UN High-Level Climate Champions, UCL Energy Institute, and the United Nations Foundation, this Call to Action demonstrates strong industry momentum in decarbonization through ecosystem wide investments. The Call to Action launch was held at the Global Renewables Hub at COP 29, and featured a panel moderated by Jonas Moberg of the Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2, with CWP's Alex Hewitt, Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, M.V.O., MBA, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative and Fortescue's Andrew Forrest. “Nearly a decade after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, the time is now for governments and industry to line up behind an ambitious, International Maritime Organization-mandated trajectory and mechanisms to drive shipping emissions reductions. Next year’s IMO meetings will consider what is likely the single most important policy decision for driving a new international market for zero-emissions fuels, in turn delivering a massive lift to the emerging green hydrogen market and the important projects required to supply it,” said Alex Hewitt, cofounder and executive board director of CWP Global. Close collaboration and coordination between green hydrogen producers, shipping actors, and policy makers is vital to build the enabling environments, as ensuring the right policy instruments and architecture that will support hydrogen-derived scalable zero-emission fuels (SZEFs) is paramount. A number of key steps are already being taken – orders for dual-fuel vessels are on the rise, increasing numbers of governments are developing national hydrogen policies, demand for zero-emission shipping services is rising, and regulation of shipping fuels will serve to establish significant demand, accelerating all aspects of this ecosystem. Yesterday evening, CWP Global Co-Founder Alex Hewitt welcomed participants at the Venice Hydrogen Forum alongside Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2 CEO Jonas Moberg. Organized together with the Venice Sustainability Foundation, the gathering of global leaders from the public and private sectors will focus on strategies for the transport and trade of hydrogen and its derivatives by pipeline and other means, to foster the discussion across the Mediterranean and develop a conducive environment for future agreements and joint actions.   For CWP, a key focus this week will be the opportunity for our large-scale projects in Africa, including Angola, Mauritania, Morocco and Djibouti, to supply the European market in pursuit of its goal to import 10 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen and derivatives by 2030. The current challenges to rapid scale-up are undeniable, but with intensive and dedicated collaboration between project developers, investors, offtakers and government, we look forward to green hydrogen taking its rightful place in the toolbox for industrial decarbonisation and the Green New Deal in Europe. https://lnkd.in/emFSa_N2
