  • In the 2023 Australian Community Attitudes to Privacy Survey, it was clear that privacy was a shared concern across the population. Many had reported that their information had been subject to unauthorised access within the previous year and consequently experienced harm from it.   Australian Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner, Angelene Falk, reported that “89% of Australians want the Government to do more”. With the new privacy reforms set in place for 2024, there is a collective expectation for increased government action to address these concerns and enhance privacy protections. #privacy #compliance #government #business

  • Can your business confidently identify where all your data resides across your organisation? At the 2023 IAPP ANZ Summit, it was commonly identified that many businesses often retain data longer than their intended purpose. This hoarding of large and old data puts businesses at greater risk in the event of a breach. With many businesses unable to identify where these datasets reside, the implementation of comprehensive data governance becomes increasingly evident.    Businesses need to familiarise themselves with the concept of data minimalisation, by actively managing their data and ensuring it isn’t held onto past its intended purpose. As Angelene Falk, Australian Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner stated, “You can’t breach what you don’t hold”. #privacy #compliance #data #dataprivacy #business

  • It is important to recognise the power that personal data holds. While operating in a digital landscape, your organisation is always at risk of potential threats or attacks to your sensitive information.   As Kate Bower, Fellow at UTS Human Technology Institute put it, “Digital data has physical consequences”.   Furthermore, the consequence of an attack not only affects your business but also your customers. It can result in financial, legal and reputational damage that could have been avoided with the right safeguards in place.   Protect your data privacy, protect your customers, protect your business. #Privacy #compliance #business

  • With the progression of technology and the digital landscape, data breaches are becoming an increasingly prevalent threat to both big and small businesses. While organisations must understand the impact of a data breach at an operational level it is also important to assess the impact at an executive level.   At the 2023 IAPP ANZ Summit, Amyn Nathwani, Head of Privacy at Healthdirect Australia expressed this sentiment, advocating for organisations to look at the impact of data breaches at an executive level. By empowering executives to understand and lead in mitigating the consequences, organisations can establish a robust approach to their privacy programs. Proactive engagement at the highest level is key to safeguarding your data privacy and maintaining trust within your organisation. #dataprivacy #privacy #compliance #business #organisation

  • With several new technologies and software being implemented across a range of industries, companies must evaluate the potential risks they pose. Companies should be proactive to uphold and maintain robust privacy standards and that includes running PIAs on new technologies being implemented across the organisation.   At the 2023 IAPP ANZ Summit, Jeannette Van Den Bulk, Deputy Commissioner at the Office of Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia put it frankly “We need to make generalised assessments from a risk-based approach”.   Personal data holds significant power, and it is important to understand the risk your business faces in the event of unauthorised access. #privacy #compliance #business #pia

  • At the 2023 IAPP ANZ Summit, the use of AI and its implications on privacy was a major talking point in the industry. The use of AI has significantly grown and is being implemented across a range of technologies and industries. While this rapid innovation of AI aims to progress efficiencies and capabilities it is important to recognise the potential risks that it poses and the need for regulation within the Australian Privacy Landscape. Navigating the use of AI demands a delicate balance of progress and privacy safeguards to ensure ethical and secure AI integration. #privacy #compliance #AI #technology

  • Have you considered the information you’ve shared online?   In today’s digital landscape, your personal data holds significant power. In a culture of online social engagement, our biometric and personal information is often shared both by ourselves and others through photos and videos, posts and profiles.    At the 2023 IAPP ANZ Summit, Partner and Privacy lead at Information Integrity Solutions, Nicole Stephensen wisely stated, “Our digital footprint begins before our physical one is formed”.   As our digital presence evolves it is important for the businesses who host this data to prioritise robust data privacy protection measures ensuring information on these platforms is handled responsibly. Stephensen’s insight emphasises the need for businesses to uphold stringent privacy standards in the growing digital era. #privacy #compliance #data
