I had an incredible opportunity to be a panellist at the Australasian AID Conference 2024 at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University, Canberra in Australia, held from 03 - 05 December 2024. In the context of AID & Security, I presented on “Chinese Aid & Environmental Impact: Reimagining Human Security in Zimbabwe." My research highlighted how Chinese aid has delivered notable infrastructural projects in Zimbabwe such as the new parliament, airport expansion, the defence college, and Hwange Units 7 & 8. While these align with the state security agenda and the “win-win” narrative, my findings in areas like Mutoko reveal growing community concerns about environmental degradation and human insecurity resulting from Chinese economic activities. This underscores the need for China to address human security issues in its engagements and for the Zimbabwean government to prioritize human security, blending it with the African Ubuntu philosophy. Such an approach could foster environmental sustainability, protect community dignity, and enhance local value addition and beneficiation in this bilateral relationship. Finally, it was amazing that I spoke to development partners and donors in the Asia Pacific region on why the Zimbabwean community needs their collaborative efforts (through intellectual & material resources) to tackle existential problems/threats such as climate change, guaranteeing safe water, green energy, strong institutions, food & health security and aid transparency in both rural and urban communities. So, Ernest Moyo and I have co-authored a working paper on this study, and we are excited about its publication prospects in the near future. I express my sincere gratitude to the conference organizers (Development Policy Centre) for funding my flights and accommodation. It's been a wonderful stay in Canberra and an opportunity to connect with thoughtful global experts.
