About us
The Development Policy Centre (Devpolicy) is a think tank for aid and development serving Australia, the region, and the global development community. We undertake independent research and promote practical initiatives to improve the effectiveness of Australian aid, to support the development of Papua New Guinea and the Pacific island region, and to contribute to better global development policy. We were established in September 2010 and are based at Crawford School of Public Policy in the College of Asia and the Pacific at The Australian National University. Our publications, discussion papers, policy briefs and reports make our research available for all. Our events are fora for the dissemination of findings and the exchange of information and ideas. The Devpolicy Blog is our platform for analysis, discussion and debate.

"While the Philippines faces several challenges to its economic growth, promising opportunities are on the horizon," says Arsenio Balisacan, Secretary of the National Economic and Development Authority in the Philippines. "Like its regional peers in previous decades, the Philippines has entered a demographic sweet spot." "The country is also well-positioned to leverage its extensive migrant networks to support capacity building and technology infusion, especially in this age of digital connectedness." https://lnkd.in/gfrnSjMe #AAC2024 #opening #10years

I had an incredible opportunity to be a panellist at the Australasian AID Conference 2024 at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University, Canberra in Australia, held from 03 - 05 December 2024. In the context of AID & Security, I presented on “Chinese Aid & Environmental Impact: Reimagining Human Security in Zimbabwe." My research highlighted how Chinese aid has delivered notable infrastructural projects in Zimbabwe such as the new parliament, airport expansion, the defence college, and Hwange Units 7 & 8. While these align with the state security agenda and the “win-win” narrative, my findings in areas like Mutoko reveal growing community concerns about environmental degradation and human insecurity resulting from Chinese economic activities. This underscores the need for China to address human security issues in its engagements and for the Zimbabwean government to prioritize human security, blending it with the African Ubuntu philosophy. Such an approach could foster environmental sustainability, protect community dignity, and enhance local value addition and beneficiation in this bilateral relationship. Finally, it was amazing that I spoke to development partners and donors in the Asia Pacific region on why the Zimbabwean community needs their collaborative efforts (through intellectual & material resources) to tackle existential problems/threats such as climate change, guaranteeing safe water, green energy, strong institutions, food & health security and aid transparency in both rural and urban communities. So, Ernest Moyo and I have co-authored a working paper on this study, and we are excited about its publication prospects in the near future. I express my sincere gratitude to the conference organizers (Development Policy Centre) for funding my flights and accommodation. It's been a wonderful stay in Canberra and an opportunity to connect with thoughtful global experts. To fellow colleagues in academia/research, keep seeking for platforms to share and amplify your voices as your ideas matter! "The development community cannot simply stay in its comfort zone," says Center for Global Development President Emeritus Masood Ahmed. "We have accumulated expertise in cross-border cooperation, rigorous impact measurement, and effective partnership delivery." "This knowledge needs to inform broader policy debates to ensure development outcomes aren’t shortchanged for lack of advocacy. The stakes are too high to do otherwise." https://lnkd.in/g8ptnznW #AAC2024 The Asia Foundation #MitchellOration #10years #AidandDevelopment #DevelopmentCooperation
