Major #gold and #copper discoveries are becoming rarer and rarer... In 2023, there were no major #Gold discoveries globally despite #exploration expenditures reaching approximately $5.9 billion. This marks a significant decline compared to previous years and underscores a growing trend of diminishing new #discoveries. Since 2020, only five #major gold finds have been recorded, contributing a total of 17 million ounces to global #reserves. These discoveries represent a smaller scale, with an average size of 3.5 million ounces, down from the 5.5 million-ounce average between 2010 and 2019. This scarcity highlights a critical challenge for the gold mining #industry, as older mines deplete and new large-scale deposits fail to materialize. With global gold production forecasted to peak at 110 million ounces in 2026 and decline thereafter, the industry's ability to meet future #demand remains under pressure. As for #Copper, according to S&P Global, major copper discoveries have seen a sharp decline since 2000, raising significant concerns about future #supply. Between 1990 and 2021, only 12 of 228 identified deposits were discovered in the past decade, contributing just 5.2% of total copper found since 1990. EY added that "#Mining companies must continue to develop better ways to extract and optimize critical minerals and metals to meet soaring demand, while also protecting our environment. This complicated problem is driven by interwoven factors. Declining ore grades increase the costs of extraction. #Exploration budgets are up, but so are costs, and fewer discoveries are being made."
