  • Huge congratulations to Dr.Adrian M., this year's Hall of Fame award winner for production at Diamond Member, Earth Systems! 🌟 He just delivered an inspiring talk on behalf of Australia New Zealand Biochar Industry Group (ANZBIG) at the Victorian Bioenergy Network Shepparton Forum. Biochar technology is a game-changer, offering renewable heat and energy solutions that are integral to Australia’s bioenergy future. At Earth Systems, we’re proud to be part of the movement driving renewable heat and energy solutions in Australia’s bioenergy network. #Biochar technology continues to play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable, #NetZero future. #bioenergy #woodvinegar #bioproducts #cdr #biochar Together, we’re moving closer to #NetZero with innovations like #Biochar, #WoodVinegar, and #BioProducts leading the way.

This years Hall of Fame award winner for production, Dr Adrian M. at Diamond Member, Earth Systems just gave a great talk on behalf of ANZBIG at the Victorian Bioenergy Network Shepparton Forum. Also Diamond Member Rainbow Bee Eater Pty Ltd partnering with Optimal Group showcased the Katunga Fresh project which will process 18000 tonnes of crop residues per annum into clean syngas to heat glasshouses, produce biochar and wood vinegar for agricultural and industrial applications. It was also great to hear Mark Wallace at Link Energy Services talk to all the renewable energy credits available for bioenergy projects with biochar. I enjoyed catching up with Gold roadmap sponsor and crowdfund impact supporter Victor Kyriakou of @KSI Sawmills based in Shepparton, there is great potential there. Finally a big thanks to our Shaun Scallan who volunteers his time for both VBN and ANZBIG. Biochar technology aka pyrolysis, gasification and carbonisation plays an important renewable heat and energy source within Australia’s bioenergy network and has many synergies with anaerobic digestion to meet any renewable gas targets that the Vic govt may deploy in the future to enable scale up and the establishment of a circular economy precinct in region. #bioenergy #biochar #woodvinegar #bioproducts #cdr #netzero

Pioneering Innovation for a Sustainable Future: Coffee Concrete in Victoria’s Big Build 🚧🌿 We are excited to announce Earth Systems' involvement in a groundbreaking sustainability initiative that reflects our commitment to a greener future. As part of Victoria's Big Build, Coffee Concrete, developed at RMIT University, is being laid in Pakenham. This innovative solution replaces a portion of river sand with biochar made from spent coffee grounds, proving that waste can be transformed into valuable resources. At Earth Systems, we converted five tonnes of coffee grounds – the equivalent of 140,000 coffees – into biochar for this project. This remarkable initiative showcases how waste can be repurposed in ways that not only reduce our ecological footprint but also offer practical, cost-effective solutions for industries. Projects like this highlight the importance of innovation in our mission to utilize waste in ways that positively impact the planet’s future. By embracing circular economy principles, we’re not just reducing landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions—we’re building a sustainable world. It’s inspiring to collaborate with RMIT University, Major Road Projects Victoria, and BildGroup to bring this vision to life. Together, we’re laying the foundations for a greener, more sustainable infrastructure. 🌍♻️ Let’s continue driving change—one innovative solution at a time. #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #CoffeeConcrete #Biochar #EarthSystems #BigBuild #Innovation #GreenerFuture #WasteToResource

Put carbon back into the earth and unlock the full potential of your land with Biochar! This carbon-rich material, produced from organic matter like wood and crop waste through pyrolysis (burning in the absence of oxygen), is a game-changer for soil health and climate action. Biochar contributes to mitigation of 3 GHG emissions: Carbon dioxide – initially by circumventing biomass decomposition and harvesting the carbon, but also once in soil it continues to draw the CO2 from the atmosphere. Methane – Use in lagoon bonds, general existence in the soil and through feeding ruminants Nitrous Oxide by its behaviour in the soil. So, whatever your application of the biochar it is always contributing to reducing GHG emissions in some way. Southland Carbon is committed to making the purest high carbon biochar (88.8%) for any application and sees double the benefits of attacking multiple emission types through animal applications. The result? Healthier soil, stronger plants, and increased crop yields—all while promoting long-term soil and livestock health. Biochar not only boosts farm productivity but also helps combat climate change, making it a win for both your land and the environment. Economic Development at City of Greater Geelong

NEXUS Highlights 10 Years of Clean Economy Support and Looks Ahead. We’re still on a high from our massive NEXUS Clean Economy Showcase on Friday 23 August that wrapped up the 2024 Geelong Small Business Festival! Delivered by the City of Greater Geelong and Victorian Cleantech Cluster, the event showcased the last 10 years of clean economy action while exploring how to tap into the economic development outcomes over the next decade. We had over 100 stakeholders come together across business, industry, academia and government to attend presentations, hear panel discussions and view clean economy products and initiatives. A standout of the day was hearing from visionary CEO and Co-Founder of circular economy consultancy Coreo, Ashleigh Morris (GAICD), who also features on this year’s Australian Financial Review Sustainability Leaders List. Ashleigh highlighted the shift from "silos to systems" thinking, the importance of building for disassembly, and emphasised the value of circularity for nature, society, the economy, and organisations. This home-grown world-renowned speaker also discussed LEGO's transition to a circular economy and was looking forward to the Australian Government’s upcoming National Circular Economy Framework. We had a full program of illuminating panel discussions about: 🌟policy and strategy drivers in state and federal government; 🌟local small and medium sized enterprise talent in the clean economy space; 🌟councils delivering clean economy initiatives; and 🌟companies and organisations contributing to the clean economy. We were also fortunate to have Here Comes the Sun author Andy McCarthy, Yasmin Mobayad and Joshua Maxwell de Hoog from lowercasepoetry and event illustrator Elise Motalli ✏️ provide thought-provoking content. It was fantastic to connect with so many like-minded people who are passionate about accelerating the clean economy. We’ve had resoundingly positive feedback from attendees about the NEXUS program, insights gained and networking. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed towards making the day such a success. We’re excited about what the future holds in the clean economy space. • A Groundbreaking Achievement for the CharMaker! We're proud to announce that the CharMaker technology has achieved a major milestone—Victoria's FIRST full Operating License (OL) from the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA), granted to Green Man Char at their Yarra Ranges Biochar facility. This license marks a significant breakthrough, confirming the environmental suitability and regulatory recognition of biochar production through pyrolysis. At Earth Systems, the CharMaker has been instrumental in converting local arborists' wood chips into high-quality biochar, offering a sustainable solution for waste management and environmental remediation. Unlike traditional bioenergy systems, CharMaker’s pyrolysis technology has carved out its own category in environmental legislation, setting a precedent for future biochar projects across Victoria and beyond. With this OL in place, biochar production is now ready to scale, opening doors to commercial markets. This success lays the groundwork for expanding biochar projects not just in Victoria but across Australia. Together, we're paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future through biochar innovation. 🌍 #CharMaker #Biochar #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #CircularEconomy #EPA #GreenManChar #EarthSystems #GreenInnovation

Principal Environmental Engineer at Earth Systems

Great news for Victoria! We got Victoria's FIRST full Operating License (OL) from the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA). It certainly took some time and an education effort but the Vic EPA was supportive of this excellent project taking wood chip from local tree arborists and diverting it to the Yarra Ranges Biochar facility. We take the wood chip and convert it to biochar via our CharMaker facility. It was clear that unlike other bioenergy systems (e.g. combustion wood boiler) pyrolysis does not have its own unique category in the various environmental legislation and acts but a way forward was found for 1. pyrolysis and 2. the biochar product and we now have a full license and a designation on the biochar making it suitable for market. Bring on the production! Many thanks to Julian G. and Yarra Ranges Council for their support in this process, and the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA). Now that this OL has been established, hopefully this makes future biochar projects easier in our state, and other states in Australia.
