Our Resilience Projects series brings you the stories of community-led disaster resilience initiatives that are making a real difference on the ground in our four partner communities. This month, you can read about the inspiring story of Rock On For Climate Action - a night of music and motivation run by Sam Fletcher in Tomakin, Eurobodalla, NSW - that brought community together around shared goals to reduce impact of climate change. "Rock On For Climate Action was a big learning and networking experience for those involved, and having grant funding for our first event let us learn in a financially safer space," Sam said. Check out the full interview with Sam here: https://lnkd.in/gdVFmTRf Each Resilience Project is testament to the process of participatory granting and co-designed resilience, where locals are leading the way for future resilience based on specific needs identified by their communities. #firetoflourish #resilienceprojects #disasterresilience #disasterrecovery #communitydevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #eurobodalla Monash University | Monash Sustainable Development Institute | Paul Ramsay Foundation | Australian Communities Foundation | Eurobodalla Shire Council

Fire to Flourish East Gippsland, in partnership with Gippsland Community Foundation, are excited to announce 16 successful projects that have been funded through this year's Resilience Planning to Granting round. This collection of disaster resilience projects supports East Gippsland’s remote spread of communities with empowerment and self-determination around post-disaster funding – part of Fire to Flourish's ongoing trials of innovative, flexible, accessible funding for communities. Sara Matthews, F2F East Gippsland Community Lead, is quick to point out the need to enable community members to lead their own disaster resilience. "Participatory granting is non-competitive. Communities bring their own lived experience and local knowledge in self determining community strengths, aspirations and priorities for decision making,” she said. Learn all about the new projects, from communities of Gipsy Point, Genoa, Cann Valley, Cabbage Tree Creek and Bemm River, in the news article below. https://lnkd.in/gwHtc_JT #firetoflourish #disasterresilience #disasterrecovery #communitydevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #emergencymanagement #eastgippsland Monash University | Monash Sustainable Development Institute | Paul Ramsay Foundation

Check out this new Global Sustainability journal article from Fire to Flourish PhD scholar Belinda Davis, exploring transformative pathways for the social processes of disaster resilience. https://lnkd.in/gpugUi6N While work to drive systems change is urgent, we also need to understand the social processes that influence a community's experience of disaster if we are going to create sustainable changes that make a real difference. Belinda's article unpacks these processes and the relationships that shape community opportunities for transformative change. And that's a wrap! 8 community projects funded. 8 projects that meet community-identified priorities. 8 projects designed by community, for community. 8 projects that build community bushfire resilience. Feeling very grateful for being able to work with this incredible community. A fantastic feeling after over a year of work. The Tenterfield Bushfire Learning Review is a community-based after action review and participatory granting process. A year ago, after a devastating bushfire, Tenterfield community members asked us to help them reflect and learn from the event - to identify what worked well and what needs to change for next time. On Saturday Dr Zoe D'Arcy and I, together with the Fire to Flourish Tenterfield team Matt Sing, Gina Carpenter and Helen Duroux, hosted the final workshop of this process. Fire to Flourish has piloted a novel participatory granting process: based on the priorities identified in the learning review, we put out an EOI for projects and community members decided which projects will be funded. They funded 8 amazing projects which will strengthen Tenterfield's bushfire resilience. This process is an innovation in lessons management and community disaster resilience. I reckon it could be done with any community after any type of emergency. Feel free to reach out if you want to learn more. Report with full details coming soon! Shout-out to Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance's Post-Event Review Capability (PERC) methodology which contributed much to our approach. Northern Rivers Community Foundation for amazing partnership in granting. In our new Resilience Projects series, we bring you the stories of community-led disaster resilience initiatives that are making a real difference on the ground in our four partner communities. Each Resilience Project is testament to the process of participatory granting and co-designed resilience, where locals are leading the way for future resilience based on specific needs identified by their communities. This month we are sharing the inspiring story of the Regenerate, Learn, Grow project in Clarence Valley, NSW. This project runs Fire to Flourish-funded workshops at Chaffin Creek Farm on Yaegl Country, which are supporting the community with connection and knowledge to regenerate their land for increased food security. "I really undervalued the benefit of the deep community connection that the workshops would enable between participants. It was through the granting process and the funding that the community connection of this project really started to deepen and now it’s an integral part of community resilience." Gina Lopez (from Share. Create. Innovate.) said about running the workshops. I am thrilled and humbled to share that Fire to Flourish has won the National Community Award in the Resilient Australia Awards. To me, this honour reflects the sector’s appetite to embrace community leadership, partnership and action in Australia’s resilience efforts, and its recognition that this requires new ways of understanding, valuing, relating and doing. I am delighted that the place-based model Fire to Flourish is co-creating with communities can offer part of the solution. Congratulations to all the other winners and nominees, yesterday’s awards ceremony was full of inspiration, emotion and celebration - there are amazing initiatives happening across the country that point to the way forward in reimagining our systems of support. And I was so happy to see many of the winning projects involved First Nations leadership and priorities. Particular congratulations to the Australian Red Cross too, it’s a privilege to stand alongside its First Nations Recovery Network in jointly winning the Community Award. Thank you to the Fire to Flourish team, this award is yours. The work we do is not easy - the gritty realities of creating transformative solutions involve embracing uncertainty and complexity, collaborating across diverse norms and knowledges, and navigating the many barriers that come with systems that haven’t yet caught up with today’s needs. You bring courage, persistence and generosity every day, and you are really making a difference - I am so grateful. Thank you to our partner communities - Clarence Valley, Eurobodalla, Tenterfield and East Gippsland - for welcoming us into your community and taking the leap to come on this social innovation journey. The commitment, strength, knowledge, skills and passion you constantly bring to create the conditions for your community to flourish is truly inspiring. Australia is watching and learning alongside you. Thank you to our cornerstone partners for making Fire to Flourish possible - Paul Ramsay Foundation Metal Manufactures and Monash University.
