We’re grateful to all the academics and industry partners who joined us for the first Annual Workshop of our ARC Research Hub for Value-Added Processing of Underutilised Carbon Waste. Thank you for your time, energy, and expertise. It was inspiring to see the collaboration between academia and industry, and it highlighted the power of combining theoretical knowledge with practical innovation. Together, we are shaping the future of waste upcycling and creating opportunities for growth and impact. A special thanks to our speakers and panellists for their insightful presentations. It was great to have the opening remarks by our Deputy Dean Adrian Neild from Monash Engineering. Next we heard from Professor John Thwaites from the Monash Sustainable Development Institute with an update on the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group, followed by Professor Edward KOSIOR from NEXTEK Ltd, who shared the challenges and innovations of recycling post-consumer plastics. Then Peter Bury from Chemistry Australia showed us the industry perspective of the circular economy. Last but not least our Deputy Hub Director Professor Dongke Zhang from The University of Western Australia talked about our Hub as well as some success stories of working with industry during his career. Looking forward to continued collaboration and more opportunities to work together in the future! #circulareconomy #wasteupcycling #plasticwaste Lian Zhang Alan Chaffee Jo Lindsay Muxina Konarova Sankar Bhattacharya Shankar Cumarasamy GAICD Jackie Rong Leonie van 't Hag Ed Meysztowicz Martin Geissdoerfer Nicholas (Ze-Xian) Low Zhanying Zhang Pete Cass Alison Duguid Baiqian Dai Australian Research Council

♻️ 🚀 🦘 Excited to see momentum gathering behind the circular economy in Australia! The Australian government agrees, with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) just having published a national circular economy framework for Australia: https://lnkd.in/e5C8pRWi supported by the recommendations of the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group (CEMAG): https://lnkd.in/e8esjbBf Thrilled to see some of the key points we had proposed in Monash University's submission to the Productivity Commission: https://lnkd.in/ecdhDKFg taken up by the government. We hope that this is just the starting shot for Australia’s new mission to “Double the circularity of the economy by 2035” and unlock yearly 💰 $26 billion more Gross Domestic Product 😶🌫️ 14% less greenhouse gas emissions 🚛 26 million tonnes less landfill by then. What goes into making a brand new Masters course? In February 2021, I sat in my first development meeting for what would become Monash University’s Master of Behaviour and Systemic Change (MBSC). After a diverse collaborative process and heaps of refinement, I’m proud to be part of the team launching it in 2025 – a transformative degree which will make future leaders more creative and effective in tackling global challenges. In the MBSC, I’ll be teaching systems thinking, innovation, and creativity for transformative change. I'm also really excited to bring facilitation skills into my curricular units for the first time, having done a lot of work with industry in this space - an essential mindset and toolkit for the collaborative and multi-perspective work of systemic change. If you’re ready to address challenges like climate change, inequality, or community wellbeing, check out the link in the comments to find out more and enrol. Australian businesses are being urged to abandon the damaging consumption culture of events such as Boxing Day sales, and transition to sustainable, circular business models. “Eighty-five percent of Australians are concerned about the amount of waste and consumption in society, with younger Australians linking this issue directly with climate change. Two-thirds of consumers want businesses to do more to embrace the circular economy.” Learn more in our recent Monash Lens article Monash Sustainable Development Institute Martin Geissdoerfer Jennifer Macklin #circulareconomy #circularbusinessmodels #sdg12
