Fire to Flourish Clarence Valley and the Northern Rivers Community Foundation recently opened the final round for community-led disaster resilience funding, focused on Caring for Country and Youth. Totalling $420,000, this round is open until Monday 3 February for individuals or organisations wanting to kickstart their small-to-medium community projects that prioritise Indigenous knowledge, help connect people with Country, and build sustainable resilience. The criteria and decision-making process for this round were co-created with a group of Aboriginal community representatives living across Bundjalung, Gumbaynggirr and Yaegl Countries in the Clarence Valley, as well as consultation with youth. Happy new year everyone! We are kicking off the year in celebration of Aayushi Shah, our Project Coordinator - Local Impact, who was recently featured in the Herald Sun as one of many inspiring Indian-Australian women redefining the future of STEM in Victoria. In addition to the impressive amount of behind-the-scenes work she does to support our partner communities, Aayushi also generously contributes to anti-racism programs and action at Monash, including previous roles with the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team and Anti-Racism Working Group, as well as contributions to gender-based violence prevention. It's great to see Aayushi and other Indian-Australian women getting the recognition they deserve! Monash University | Monash Sustainable Development Institute | Paul Ramsay Foundation

An exciting start to 2025! An honour being featured in the Herald Sun alongside some Victorian Indian-Australian women blazing trails in STEM. I truly never thought I’d be in the STEM field - it seemed out of reach, for the boys, or just not for me and my brain… Despite being in and around sustainability for 10 years, the dots never connected 😅 Science and STEM subjects were always placed on a pedestal which I honestly didn’t believe I could participate in - if this is you, know you truly can contribute to the world using your unique skills and interests 🙌🏽 Seeing this and the women I’m featured alongside is a reminder of what is possible, and how you’ll always end up in the right place when you follow your passions. Some of my colleagues were featured too - check out their work! Kavya Raj PhD Tanvi Oza Rashina Hoda A/Prof. Sonika Tyagi Thanks for the feature! Our Resilience Projects series brings you the stories of community-led disaster resilience initiatives that are making a real difference on the ground in our four partner communities. This month, you can read about the inspiring story of Rock On For Climate Action - a night of music and motivation run by Sam Fletcher in Tomakin, Eurobodalla, NSW - that brought community together around shared goals to reduce impact of climate change. "Rock On For Climate Action was a big learning and networking experience for those involved, and having grant funding for our first event let us learn in a financially safer space," Sam said. Check out the full interview with Sam here: https://lnkd.in/gdVFmTRf Each Resilience Project is testament to the process of participatory granting and co-designed resilience, where locals are leading the way for future resilience based on specific needs identified by their communities. #firetoflourish #resilienceprojects #disasterresilience #disasterrecovery #communitydevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #eurobodalla Monash University | Monash Sustainable Development Institute | Paul Ramsay Foundation | Australian Communities Foundation | Eurobodalla Shire Council

Fire to Flourish East Gippsland, in partnership with Gippsland Community Foundation, are excited to announce 16 successful projects that have been funded through this year's Resilience Planning to Granting round. This collection of disaster resilience projects supports East Gippsland’s remote spread of communities with empowerment and self-determination around post-disaster funding – part of Fire to Flourish's ongoing trials of innovative, flexible, accessible funding for communities. Sara Matthews, F2F East Gippsland Community Lead, is quick to point out the need to enable community members to lead their own disaster resilience. "Participatory granting is non-competitive. Communities bring their own lived experience and local knowledge in self determining community strengths, aspirations and priorities for decision making,” she said. Learn all about the new projects, from communities of Gipsy Point, Genoa, Cann Valley, Cabbage Tree Creek and Bemm River, in the news article below. https://lnkd.in/gwHtc_JT #firetoflourish #disasterresilience #disasterrecovery #communitydevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #emergencymanagement #eastgippsland Monash University | Monash Sustainable Development Institute | Paul Ramsay Foundation

Check out this new Global Sustainability journal article from Fire to Flourish PhD scholar Belinda Davis, exploring transformative pathways for the social processes of disaster resilience. https://lnkd.in/gpugUi6N While work to drive systems change is urgent, we also need to understand the social processes that influence a community's experience of disaster if we are going to create sustainable changes that make a real difference. Belinda's article unpacks these processes and the relationships that shape community opportunities for transformative change. And that's a wrap! 8 community projects funded. 8 projects that meet community-identified priorities. 8 projects designed by community, for community. 8 projects that build community bushfire resilience. Feeling very grateful for being able to work with this incredible community. A fantastic feeling after over a year of work. The Tenterfield Bushfire Learning Review is a community-based after action review and participatory granting process. A year ago, after a devastating bushfire, Tenterfield community members asked us to help them reflect and learn from the event - to identify what worked well and what needs to change for next time. On Saturday Dr Zoe D'Arcy and I, together with the Fire to Flourish Tenterfield team Matt Sing, Gina Carpenter and Helen Duroux, hosted the final workshop of this process. Fire to Flourish has piloted a novel participatory granting process: based on the priorities identified in the learning review, we put out an EOI for projects and community members decided which projects will be funded. They funded 8 amazing projects which will strengthen Tenterfield's bushfire resilience. This process is an innovation in lessons management and community disaster resilience. I reckon it could be done with any community after any type of emergency. Feel free to reach out if you want to learn more. Report with full details coming soon! Shout-out to Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance's Post-Event Review Capability (PERC) methodology which contributed much to our approach. Northern Rivers Community Foundation for amazing partnership in granting.
