What a year it has been! The Gelganyem Group and Traditional Owners have managed their money, protected their Country, grown their businesses, promoted law and culture, supported TO children and elders, sponsored community initiatives and sports activities, celebrated TO excellence, rewarded school attendance and employment milestones, and attended numerous events to discuss their relationship with Argyle diamond mine, the land on which it sits, and each other. Well done everyone. Truly an incredible effort. It is with great pleasure that we share our 2024 Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/gnUtiUWA

Gelganyem Limited Chair Kia Dowell GAICD and CEO Dominique Reeves attended the 2024 International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Sydney this week. Over 9,000 people from around the globe attended the event this year – an increase of 20% from last year’s event. Over 115 countries were represented at the conference. The program included presentations, panels, and round table discussions advancing the nature of how we think about mining and how the industry is prioritising critical minerals, the transition to net zero, ESG investor expectations, and First Nations relationships. The event included representatives from the Australian Federal and State Governments, many Ministers and decision-makers who will influence laws and policies about mining and mine closure in the future. Many industry representatives attended to discuss lessons learned, the increasing importance of meaningful engagement with First Nations people, and their social licence to operate. You may ask: why would an Aboriginal group from the East Kimberley travel all that way to attend a mining conference? The answer is simple: in this country, mining takes place every day on Aboriginal land. The voices of those people must be heard in all stages of the mining process – from cradle to grave. Aboriginal people are not simply stakeholders but rights holders, who must be engaged using the principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. It is critical that they are in the room when conversations about the future of the mining industry, and how it may be improved, are taking place. As a key part of the conference, Kia participated in: - an industry panel discussion about First Nations partnerships and the mining and resource sector – and the challenges and opportunities they can bring; - a roundtable conversation on how best to monitor and measure the performance of community-related initiatives for better outcomes; - a discussion in the plenary session on how First Nation’s participation in mining is moving towards co-ownership, co-design, and shared prosperity; and - a conversation with industry colleagues on the meaning of the post-mining transition and how to reimagine what happens after mining ends. Kia and Dominique also met with WA State Government representatives to discuss the current status of mine closure at Argyle diamond mine. A big thanks in particular to David Michael and his staff for their time. Gelganyem’s significant inclusion in the IMARC program represents innovative thinking within the mining sector and we thank the IMARC organisers for the opportunity to share our experiences. Congratulations to all involved and we look forward to next year.

Two years ago Sinéad Mangan opened the door to share Traditional Owners experiences of #mining and #mineclosure at the Rio Tinto owned, Argyle Diamond Mine in the East Kimberley of #WesternAustralia. It was part of the #Expanse: Pink Diamond Heist podcast and provided a perspective into a chapter of our history that highlighted the lengths people were willing to go to in the name of progress. Elements of this story and more will be shared at International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) next week including the role of Gelganyem Limited and its Board in preparing Traditional Owner families, businesses and communities for the transition. Gelganyem Limited was proud to represent Traditional Owners at the AEMEE conference in Fremantle last week. AEMEE is a not-for-profit company set up to grow Indigenous businesses in Australia and overseas in mining and allied industries. The theme of the conference was 'From Sparks to Flames: Indigenous Business Fueling the Future'. Our Chair, Kia Dowell GAICD, presented to attendees on the story of Traditional Owners at Argyle diamond mine and how they have leveraged their rights and interests to build capacity, create and grow their businesses, and support their families to encourage broader economic development opportunities for Miriwoong and Gija people in the East Kimberley. Kia also spoke candidly about the challenging and pioneering work that Traditional Owners and Gelganyem Limited are doing in mine closure. A huge thank you to AEMEE and to Jyi Lawton and Derek Flucker for the invitation and for their kindness and generosity throughout the conference. Last week I had the privilege of representing Gelganyem Limited at the 17th annual AEMEE conference in Freemantle, WA. The theme for this year was 'From Sparks to Flames: Indigenous Business Fueling the Future' and let me say that it did not disappoint. Led by the passionate Jyi Lawton and Derek Flucker, the event delivered on a two-day packed agenda exploring the trials and triumphs of indigenous businesses, the mining and energy sector and the people that work hard for change and success between the two. Congratulations to each of the winners of the annual AEMEE awards, and a special mention to the very raw, honest and determined presentation by Gelganyem Limited chairperson, Kia Dowell GAICD. Kia shared the traditional owner's experience of the closure of Argyle Diamond Mine, and unpacked the impacts of mine closure on businesses, country, community and the political landscape. She expressed a call to action to industry and businesses to ensure that agreement-making and governance remains fit for purpose and that closure design, criteria, strategy and rehabilitation truly incorporates the post-mining vision of Aboriginal people. Thanks again AEMEE for a stellar event - see you next year in Darwin, with a whole bunch more of us!
The AEMEE Board extends heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the winners of the prestigious 2024 AEMEE Resource Sector Awards. Just had to re-post this!!👇 You’ll be enriched for taking 3 minutes out of your day to read this inspiring narrative by Kia Dowell GAICD, an established leader in her own right across so many areas. Traditional Owner businesses are so much more than a transaction for your company’s ESG procurement target. Including the fact that it just might positively influence your return on investment, these social changemakers transform bias, counter stereotypes, and support institutional cultural change. I’m often banging on about building the capacity of those that want to have their capacity built. But it’s not as easy as that! Companies often have challenging ESG targets and need to think of other ways to build capacity AS WELL AS procure Aboriginal businesses. #capacitybuilding #leadership #closingthegap #reconciliation
"MDM Mining & Civil was contracted to complete the camp pad (bulk earthwork) for a 200-person capacity completion camp at the Rio Tinto Argyle Diamond Mine site. Despite the very short notice provided for the start of this project, MDM’s team quickly mobilised and collaborated seamlessly with Rio Tinto's team to initiate the work promptly. The professionalism exhibited by MDM throughout the project was exemplary. Their ability to quickly address and resolve any issues by coordinating with Rio Tinto representatives ensured that the project remained on track. Even in the face of numerous challenges, MDM successfully overcame them, demonstrating both resilience and a commitment to delivering high-quality results. I highly recommend MDM Mining & Civil for any bulk earthwork projects. Their dedication to excellence and their ability to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines is commendable. I wish MDM Mining & Civil continued success in their future endeavours." - Sarah Jayawardana, Rio Tinto #testimonial #riotinto #client #mdmmining #mining #civil #projects #riotinto #argyle

Another positive news share - when the efforts of Traditional Owners and strong leaders in our people led by a capable and determined CEO are recognised, it's a timely reminder that it's all worth it. Well done Dominique Reeves here's to more in the future.
A huge congratulations to Henry Nan Hung Pan for his CEO of the year achievement at the Third Sector Au Awards 2024 in Sydney last week. I was proud to be nominated as a finalist in such a prestigious category and to attend the awards ceremony with my colleague and friend Jessica Welch, so that we could share the story of Gelganyem Limited and the Traditional Owners it represents and the critical work they are doing in mine closure. Thank you to Third Sector Au and Centre for Social Impact for hosting such a wonderful event, allowing #unsungheroes to share their stories and showcase the important work of their different organisations. Thank you in particular to Kia Dowell GAICD and Gelganyem Limited for trusting me in this important role and for their ongoing support and guidance. #ThirdSectorAwards #UnsungHeroes #CommunityImpact #CelebrateSuccess #notforprofit #leadership
