We’re all about equal access to nature up north and we know nature is good for your health!   We recently ran native plant propagation workshops with staff at Lyell McEwen Hospital and Modbury Hospital, to coincide with the launch of the inaugural Environmental Sustainability Strategy for the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network.   We discussed the many connections between biodiversity and health. To name a few: nature and biodiversity engages the senses, is also associated with decreased cortisol (stress hormone) levels, and releases compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.   We covered native plants of Adelaide, why they’re threatened and their importance for local biodiversity – followed by the practical activity of propagating some plants. These skills will hopefully help staff add to the fantastic garden beds in the hospitals 🌱

Our annual blue-green algae management program for the River Torrens has kicked off ✔️ This program reduces the risk of harmful algal blooms in Torrens Lake through careful water monitoring, and release of flows of freshwater, if needed. This keeps algae levels down, and the lake open for use. Our program has successfully prevented a bloom since 2013. To help water from summer rainfall or a freshwater flow get out to sea, the program includes excavating a small channel at the Torrens Outlet. Over the years, more than 400 volunteers have supported our marine debris program – collecting data on the litter found in our coastal environments to help stop this rubbish at its source!    And we were pretty stoked to have our neighbours from Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board jump in and assist with the most recent surveys. They collected around 30 kg of rubbish!    The information from this survey and others happening around this time will all help inform a national investigation and database for marine plastic pollution. 

Each year, students in our Youth Environment Council program take the lead on their own projects and make a positive change for their school or neighbourhood. Their recent sharing forum reflected on the year they’ve had, including a recap of their video contributions to the ‘Voice for the Environment Statement’ – a statewide collection of young changemakers presented to the SA Government and Dr Jane Goodall (The Jane Goodall Institute).   This year’s projects focused on things like: 🌿 starting their own school environmental groups 🌿 raising awareness about local environmental issues  🌿 fundraising for conservation charities  🌿 organising litter clean-ups  🌿 better waste management at school 🌿 weeding and habitat restoration 🌿 food gardening  🌿 jewellery made from recycled materials.   Members coming from schools across SA showcased their year-long projects with friends, family and invited guests. At the heart of any organisation, there are people who hold everything together – for us, one of those people is Joyce Osborne. Joyce is the Executive Officer of the Green Adelaide Board, Executive Assistant (EA) to the Director of Green Adelaide Brenton Grear, and EA to the Presiding Member of the Board, Professor Chris Daniels. Joyce says, "Working in this sector has opened my eyes to how the environment has been treated. I don’t have all the qualifications of our environmental experts, but I’d like to think that my small contribution in the scheme of things will help to create a better future for my grandchildren and their children." All Souls St Peters is turning this patch ⬇ into a habitat-friendly garden with help from a Grassroots Grant! 🌿   The Parish has been part of the St Peters community since 1883 – holding services, social catchups, tours of their world-famous stained-glass windows, food drives and more.   Last year they decided it was time to turn an overgrown patch into a bird-and-bee-friendly garden area that the whole community can enjoy.   Check out their story: https://lnkd.in/g3zU_eYK.

It’s great to see our Grassroots Grants recipients’ amazing work shared! You may have spotted AnglicareSA’s garden project in Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News recently. We’re passionate about supporting the Captain Planets of tomorrow 🌿💪 In term 3, our yearly Youth Environmental Leaders program brought together 200+ students to explore ways to improve urban greening and biodiversity at their schools and in their communities.   With the help of 40 educators and parent volunteers, we facilitated a range of activities to spark the students' imaginations with ways to be more sustainable and look after nature.   Some favourites included:  🐦 learning about hollows for habitat with James Smith from FauNature 🌱 testing the quality of their schools’ soil for clay making  🦅 undertaking bird surveys – which Unley Primary School will use to support their awareness campaign of birds on campus! Some schools also held tours to showcase the work they are already doing 💚 Teachers shared techniques and networked with each other too. It was a win for everyone – thank you to all those who came!
