Supporting a cooler, greener, wilder and climate-resilient metropolitan South Australia
About us
We are a statutory board established in July 2020 by the Government of South Australia, with a vision to create a cooler, greener, wilder and climate-resilient Adelaide that celebrates our unique culture. We were established as part of the 2019 South Australian natural resources management reform, and the introduction of the Landscape South Australia Act 2019. We are Adelaide’s first dedicated urban environmental specialist organisation. We are focusing on guiding the people of Adelaide’s love of and connection with nature, and will practically create a cooler, greener and wilder capital city. Our area of responsibility spans across Adelaide’s 17 metropolitan councils, and includes about a third of Gulf St Vincent. Our mission is to encourage activities and policies for Adelaide that enable pro-environmental behavioural change. This will be achieved by facilitating partnerships, investing in aligned initiatives, educating about nature, and delivering iconic on-ground environmental projects. Each year, students in our Youth Environment Council program take the lead on their own projects and make a positive change for their school or neighbourhood. Their recent sharing forum reflected on the year they’ve had, including a recap of their video contributions to the ‘Voice for the Environment Statement’ – a statewide collection of young changemakers presented to the SA Government and Dr Jane Goodall (The Jane Goodall Institute). This year’s projects focused on things like: 🌿 starting their own school environmental groups 🌿 raising awareness about local environmental issues 🌿 fundraising for conservation charities 🌿 organising litter clean-ups 🌿 better waste management at school 🌿 weeding and habitat restoration 🌿 food gardening 🌿 jewellery made from recycled materials. Members coming from schools across SA showcased their year-long projects with friends, family and invited guests. Congratulations to all of these enviro-champions! At the heart of any organisation, there are people who hold everything together – for us, one of those people is Joyce Osborne. Joyce is the Executive Officer of the Green Adelaide Board, Executive Assistant (EA) to the Director of Green Adelaide Brenton Grear, and EA to the Presiding Member of the Board, Professor Chris Daniels. Joyce says, "Working in this sector has opened my eyes to how the environment has been treated. I don’t have all the qualifications of our environmental experts, but I’d like to think that my small contribution in the scheme of things will help to create a better future for my grandchildren and their children." Get a taste of Joyce's work in our latest staff profile and discover the journey that led her to working in the environment sector: https://lnkd.in/gMH7bNGC.

All Souls St Peters is turning this patch ⬇ into a habitat-friendly garden with help from a Grassroots Grant! 🌿 The Parish has been part of the St Peters community since 1883 – holding services, social catchups, tours of their world-famous stained-glass windows, food drives and more. Last year they decided it was time to turn an overgrown patch into a bird-and-bee-friendly garden area that the whole community can enjoy. Check out their story: https://lnkd.in/g3zU_eYK.

It’s great to see our Grassroots Grants recipients’ amazing work shared! You may have spotted AnglicareSA’s garden project in Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News recently. With the help of a Grassroots Grant, they’re creating a garden space as part of their Post Care Pathways program. It will help them restore habitat for wildlife, learn about wildlife and growing food, and make a communal space for connection and healing. This is what it’s all about! 🙌 Read the ABC story below ⬇ And check out our story, which covers their project, as well as BaptistCare and Junction Australia's: https://lnkd.in/gM7S_crU.

We love hearing from our podcast listeners! Thank you to everyone who’s reached out – or even just tuned in. Without you, this podcast wouldn’t exist. The Green Adelaide Podcast has been running for nearly 18 months now and had more than 4,000 streams. It’s your enviro-exclusive on the people, projects and news of metropolitan SA – and we’re so glad you’re enjoying it. We’re not your regular environmental podcast, we’re your cool cultural podcast. How we live with our environment in Adelaide is a culture that we must talk about! Got a guest or topic idea? We'd love to hear from you! Melissa Martin

We’re passionate about supporting the Captain Planets of tomorrow 🌿💪 In term 3, our yearly Youth Environmental Leaders program brought together 200+ students to explore ways to improve urban greening and biodiversity at their schools and in their communities. With the help of 40 educators and parent volunteers, we facilitated a range of activities to spark the students' imaginations with ways to be more sustainable and look after nature. Some favourites included: 🐦 learning about hollows for habitat with James Smith from FauNature 🌱 testing the quality of their schools’ soil for clay making 🦅 undertaking bird surveys – which Unley Primary School will use to support their awareness campaign of birds on campus! Some schools also held tours to showcase the work they are already doing 💚 Teachers shared techniques and networked with each other too. It was a win for everyone – thank you to all those who came! Our Cooler, Greener, Wilder grants must close in less than a week! The grants are open to all metropolitan councils and gives them the chance to share in up to $1.5 million for projects that deliver greening and cooling projects across Adelaide’s metropolitan environment. As temperatures continue to rise across the country grants like these offer councils the chance to complete meaningful projects to cool our city. We can tell you how proud we are of our Grassroots Grants recipients, but stories like this show you why. The role of nature in essential services can sometimes be overlooked, but not for these not-for-profits who are recipients of funds in our recent rounds of Grassroots Grants. AnglicareSA, BaptistCare and Junction Australia are bringing habitat-friendly spaces into their care programs – which help young people transitioning out of the care system, people sleeping rough, those escaping family and domestic violence or a lot of other challenges. It’s a privilege to share their story and support them in their journey! Read their stories: https://lnkd.in/gM7S_crU. 📷 1: Anglicare SA. 2: BaptistCare. 3: Junction.

“Gudgeons being able to call the river home once again is a testament to the work of many who continue to restore the river.” Absolutely this ⬆ Thanks to Yahoo News for covering this important topic. The fact that southern purple-spotted gudgeon can be reintroduced to the river again is a testament to numerous individuals and organisations who have contributed to restoration work over many years. We’re proud to play our part through the River Torrens Recovery Project. It makes seeing these critically endangered fish being released into the river that much better.
