#HADRI Publication: Towards ‘retroliberalism’ or food security?: Donor development aid to the agricultural sectors of four Melanesian states, 2008-2021 It is great to see this collaboration between French and English-speaking social scientists on development aid to Melanesia published. It is also great to work with our colleagues in New Caledonia, Severine Bouard, Jonas Brouillon, and Séverine Blaise. For Severine Bouard, this paper is one outcome of her time spent as a Visiting Fellow at Western Sydney University in late 2023. Thank you Nidhi D Wali, PhD for arranging Severine's visit. Finally, thank you to Charles Hawksley for leading this paper and coordinating and consolidating our contributions.   What’s in it? #PacificIslands states have numerous development challenges, and there is growing concern about #foodsecurity. In this paper, we examine donor development #aid (‘aid’) to states in the area of Melanesia in the southwest Pacific. We explore which countries and agencies give aid to #PapuaNewGuinea, #Vanuatu, #SolomonIslands and #Fiji. We use two main data sets—one from the OECD and one from the Lowy Institute in Australia— to see how much aid comes in, from whom, and what it is spent on. We then break down all aid by sector to focus on aid provided to the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries sectors and look specifically at #Agriculture. We find there is very little aid going to agriculture, and what there are links local farmers to the global market as it encourages niche production. We question this direction, arguing that an inward focus on supporting the development of stronger agricultural sectors would enhance food security and improve #nutrition. A new article published by HADRI researcher Valentina Baú addresses the role that communication and media interventions can play in fostering social cohesion among displaced populations in camp settings, through a review of both practical and theoretical approaches in this area. The aim of this review is to offer a starting point for humanitarian agencies working in refugee camps to articulate the adoption of a communication-driven approach in their social cohesion programming. HADRI researcher Zulfan Tadjoeddin will be giving a presentation on 'Democracy and/or Development? Reflecting on the Lee thesis in Indonesia' for the ANU Indonesia Project Indonesia Study Group. Indonesia’s democratic transition was a success, and now is in the third decade of democratic experience. But it has been backsliding, bringing the country to the edge of competitive authoritarianism. Entering the second half of the third decade of its current democratic experience, Indonesia will have to decide whether to stay with the path of democratic growth or returning to an authoritarian path. HADRI Research Publication: This article by Valentina Baú examines the communicative ecologies of young people in protracted situations of encampment through findings from research conducted in Kakuma refugee camp (Kenya) and Za’atari refugee camp (Jordan). Understanding existing communication platforms and networks adopted by the youth in camp settings is crucial for humanitarian agencies operating in these contexts. Such understanding can facilitate the design of more effective and targeted communication interventions that not only address humanitarian needs but also promote community development and enhance a sense of belonging among the youth.
