She brings extensive expertise in hydrometallurgical processing and secondary waste recycling. Dr. Wang is now part of Prof Zaiping Guo and A/Prof Jianfeng Mao’s group. 🔹 Mike Jureidini joins us as a Laboratory Engineer, bringing vast industry experience in renewable fuel pilot plant development and commercial plant management. Mike is now part of Prof David Lewis and Philip van Eyk's team. Earlier today I spoke with Sally Bundock from BBC News Business Today about the framework agreement on Ukraine's natural resources between the #USA and #Ukraine. Here's a quick summary based on what we learned from the Financial Times' review of the agreement reached yesterday evening:- - the initial demand from the US for a right to US$500Bn in potential revenue from exploiting Ukraine's natural resources has been dropped. The deal no longer includes this; - instead the deal talks about establishing a fund into which Ukraine would contribute 50% of proceeds earned from the 'future monetisation' of state owned mineral resources, including oil and gas and associated logistics like ports; - the fund's purpose is to re-invest these proceeds in Ukraine's recovery and economic economic development; - the obligation to 'fill the fund' explicitly excludes existing activities in Ukraine's oil and gas sector; - the deal has been approved by Ukraine's ministries of justice, economic affairs and foreign affairs but still has to go through parliament (in Ukraine) What we currently do not know - to what extent the agreement includes natural resources from territories currently occupied by #Russia? - what security guarantee or military support the US offers to Ukraine in return; - what the US' stake in the future fund will be; - what terms the US has set on control over this fund, i.e. will the US still have a last say who can be invited to jointly develop critical assets in Ukraine? The deal is presented as a framework agreement with the intention to hash out some of the points like joint ownership and the US' stake in the fund in subsequent, more detailed agreements. Over the past couple of days, different people in the Trump Administration referred to a minerals deal as 'the best security pact' Ukraine can get. The Americans pitch this deal as an economic 'iron dome', a shield protecting Ukraine from foreign aggression. This vested interest from the Americans should deter anyone from attacking the country in the future, seems to be the thought. Last Tuesday 11th February 2025, The school of UoA Chemical Engineering had the privilege of hosting Hon Joe Szakacs, MP, (Minister for Trade and Investment), Nicolle Sincock, Director, (Food, Wine, Ag, Green Economy and Tourism) and Angus Cavanough, Senior Advisor to Joe Szakacs, to a joint event hosted with our industry Partner, Iondrive, to showcase our collaboration on various projects. The visit highlighted opportunities for battery recycling, e-waste recovery, circular economy strategies, and grant funding to support our pilot plant development at the University of Adelaide. The visit took place in the Helen Mayo facilities, followed by a guided lab tour in Engineering North. The ministerial visit provided an opportunity for discussions on how Iondrive’s patented technology can be commercialised in South Australia, while ensuring intellectual property remains onshore. We look forward to progressing this collaboration between The University of Adelaide and Iondrive.
